Genetic Counselor
Position Summary
At Stony Brook University Hospital, our Children's Hospital Genetic Counselors participate in all aspects of counseling including in the Pediatric setting as well as providing collaborative support for the Stony Brook Cancer Center and prenatal services as part of the clinical and medical geneticist team. This position is integral to Stony Brook Children's Hospital and provides the opportunity excel in multidisciplinary teams focused on excellence in patient diagnosis, care coordination and patient-centered communication.
Duties of a Genetic Counselor may include the following but are not limited to:
- Provide all aspects of prenatal genetic counseling including arranging for testing as well as communication with care providers
- Assess personal and family histories associated with Hereditary Cancer syndromes and arrange for testing
- Document clinic sessions with notes written in a timely fashion
- Order Genetic labs tests, keep in touch with labs and patients, obtain consents
- Collaborate with genetic counseling team members to provide cross-coverage of oncology, pediatric and prenatal services as needed
- Discuss benefits and limitations of genetic testing options
- Assist families in understanding genetic disorders: probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, and recurrence risks
- Develop and present education and related information with team as appropriate
- Participate in research protocols and collaborative patient care initiatives as directed
- Perform administrative tasks related to counseling services and committees or special projects in which participation is expected
- Provide teaching and supervision to students or other health care professionals as appropriate
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Genetic Counseling
- Board eligible/certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics/American Board of Genetic Counseling. If board eligible, achievement of this milestone required within 1 year of employment
- Excellent communication skills, compassion for patients and collaborative work ethic
Preferred Qualifications:
- Fluent in both English and Spanish
- Demonstrated experience counseling in Pediatrics, Prenatal, and/or Oncology
- Proven ability in both team-based and autonomous environments
Anticipated Pay Range:
The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $78,030 - $91,555 Base
