Purpose of Position
This position offers a unique opportunity to play a role in an innovative program with strong connections to rural and tribal communities across the region. The successful candidate will advance Geriatrics education at the University of North Dakota, fostering interprofessional community service learning and health equity focused clinical training.
As part of this role, the individual will help administer a $5 million Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funded Geriatrics and Health Equity Training Grant, supporting education, research, and service initiatives that strengthen care for older adults in diverse communities.
In addition, this position includes a 50% clinical appointment as a Geriatrician with Altru Health System, providing the opportunity to combine academic leadership with hands-on clinical practice.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Education
- Develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs in Geriatrics with a focus on interprofessional community service learning and health equity clinical training.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to enhance Geriatrics education across multiple health professions, especially at rural and tribal training sites.
- Clinical Care
- Evaluate, provide diagnosis and treatment of patients of Altru who present with injuries or illnesses. Counsel patients and advise on preventative healthcare measures.
- Exercise Doctor's own judgment in the diagnosis and treatment of patients consistent with Altru’s policies and standards.
- Achieve the Altru Patient Engagement and Quality & Safety goals established on an annual basis. Participate in activities and support department goals as defined by department on an annual basis.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation ensuring quality patient care and assurance of appropriate reimbursements to Altru.
- Relationships and Resource Management
- Support community teaching hospitals in achieving Age Friendly Health system status.
- Participate in departmental, institutional, and community service activities aligned with the institution's mission.
- Act as a resource to other UND departments and faculty, both within and outside of SMHS.
- Research
- Engage in scholarly activities, including research in education or clinical Geriatrics, and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and academic presentations.
- Co-administer the $5 million HRSA health equity and Geriatrics training grant, ensuring compliance with grant objectives, reporting requirements, and fiscal oversight.
- Mentor and advise medical students, residents, and fellows in Geriatrics education and research.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
Minimum Requirements
- MD/DO degree with board certification or board eligibility in Geriatric Medicine.
- Eligibility for medical licensure in North Dakota and must be insurable under the Health System’s professional liability carrier prior to commencement of employment.
- Experience in Geriatrics education, curriculum development, and interprofessional training with evidence of scholarly activity in education or clinical research.
- Must be granted medical staff appointments at Altru and associated facilities as are necessary to the commission of duties prior to commencement of employment.
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
- Training in quality improvement or research methodology.
- Clinical experience in the continuum of health care.
