The Department of Literatures and Languages of the World offers a range of interdisciplinary programs that explore a diversity of cultural and linguistic contexts and forms of expression. Our programs in German studies and Digital humanities are vital sections of the department. At the intersection of these two disciplines, the position is distinguished by its dual focus: to contribute fully to teaching and research in German studies in the fields of literature, language, and culture of the German-speaking world, while developing digital approaches applied to the subjects, corpora, and methods of the humanities.

Day-to-day responsibilities

• Teach at all grade levels, dividing your time equally between German studies and Digital humanities, while demonstrating an active commitment to the principles of EDI (equity, diversity, inclusion);
• Supervise MA and PhD students;
• Develop an independent, innovative, and high-quality research program in the field of German studies and Digital humanities, in collaboration with various centers, including the Centre de rechercher interuniversitaire sur les humanités numériques (CRIHN) and the Centre canadien d'études allemandes et européennes (CCEAE);
• Apply for and secure research grants from key provincial and federal funding bodies;
• Participate in activities that promote your field (publications, conferences, scientific activities, and others);
• Contribute to the functioning of the institution by serving on departmental and faculty committees.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in German studies, Digital humanities, or a related discipline;
• Strong research record and demonstrated substantial and balanced integration of these two fields, through significant publications or work;
• Strong disciplinary expertise in German studies (with a possible focus on literature, language, history, or cultural and media studies) along with demonstrated expertise in the methods, tools, or issues specific to the Digital humanities (e.g., corpus analysis, natural language processing, digital editing, or artificial intelligence);
• Proven ability to provide high-quality university-level instruction and mentoring;
• Sufficient proficiency in German to teach in that language;
• Demonstrated potential to develop institutional, inter-university, national and international collaborations; Ability to collaborate with faculty members in interdisciplinary contexts;
• Adequate proficiency in the French language or commitment to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
