Communication Program, with the possibility for a joint appointment in Journalism
Northwestern University in Qatar seeks an outstanding colleague for a full-time open rank faculty position in Global Media Industries, to be appointed in the Communication program, with the possibility of a joint appointment in the Journalism Program. We welcome scholars with an active research agenda examining media industries from a critical, global, comparative, or transnational perspective, with a special interest in interdisciplinary approaches to the Global South. Areas of expertise may include history and culture, platforms and creator culture, production and distribution studies, policy, regulation, and management, and the impact of emerging technology, including AI, on media industries. Candidates are expected to have linguistic competence and field experience in their area of research.
In addition to a demonstrated research record commensurate with rank, or a highly promising research trajectory for candidates with a recent PhD, applicants should show competence in working with global communities, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Candidates are expected to contribute to both undergraduate and future graduate education and program development. Teaching expectations include two courses per semester, which may include core disciplinary courses, elective courses that speak to their research field, as well as contribution to NU-Q’s broader curricular needs. This could include the required “Ways of Knowing” course, the Doha Seminar honors course, graduate seminars, executive education classes, or courses qualifying for our university’s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Africana Studies, AI and Media Studies, Film and Design, Media and Politics, Middle East Studies, and Strategic Communication. There are also opportunities to collaborate with NU-Q’s Institute for Advanced Study of the Global South, Artificial Intelligence and Media Lab, and Media Majlis Museum.
NU-Q is a community of evidence-based storytellers in the Global South. We are a globally embedded institution, one of three campuses (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and twelve schools of Northwestern University, and one of several partner universities in Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. We are committed to excellence in research and teaching, a vibrant student life, and high-level undergraduate student research and media making, particularly on the Global South. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from around 60 countries.
