Graduate Assistant, Access Barnard

Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director for Advising & Programs, Access Barnard, the Graduate Assistant (GA) will assist with projects and events in support of students who identify as first-generation, lower income, and/or international. The GA will:

  • Assist with oversight of Peer Mentoring initiatives, including recruitment, training, and supervising evening office hours
  • Plan and execute Access Barnard programming initiatives and special events, including social gatherings such as study breaks and developmental workshops (academic, personal, career)
  • Assist with office communications, including social media and newsletter content
  • Research and benchmark advising, peer mentoring, and special population initiatives at peer universities; provide detailed information and suggested initiatives to supervisor
  • Assist with evaluations and assessments of programs and initiatives
  • Advise students in their connection and involvement with program activities
  • Carry out special projects and assignments, as needed

This position provides excellent exposure to the administration of Barnard College and is great experience for someone planning to pursue a career in higher education administration.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements

The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, and some knowledge of and experience with students of diverse backgrounds. We are looking for someone with a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, a student-centered focus, and a willingness to learn.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program (MA, PhD, etc.).
  • Preferred: education, counseling, student personnel, social work, or a related field.
  • Prior experience advising or working with youth, preferably in higher education.
  • Special sensitivity to concerns of students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle confidential information and data with discretion.
  • Heightened sense of professionalism, personal accountability, reliability, and integrity.
  • Must be available to work an average of 16-20 hours per week (evening hours required) in-person.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
