Summary: The Graduate Research/Teaching Assistant is a temporary and part-time graduate student position until 05/15/2026. This position supports daily laboratory operations by ensuring the maintenance of cultures, supplies, and materials necessary for smooth and efficient research and teaching activities. The incumbent in this role will report directly to Anny Cárdenas. The ideal candidate should have a strong academic background, excellent communication skills, and a passion for education and research.
Responsibilities:
- Teaching
- Assist in the preparation of course materials, including lecture notes, assignments, and exams.
- Conduct tutorials, workshops, or lab sessions to support student learning.
- Provide guidance and support to students and teaching assistant peers on course-related inquiries.
- Grading
- Evaluate and grade assignments, exams, and other assessments.
- Provide constructive feedback to students to enhance their understanding and performance.
- Maintain accurate records of student grades and attendance.
- Research Assistance
- Collaborate with the professor on ongoing research projects.
- Conduct literature reviews and assist in data collection and analysis.
- Contribute to the preparation of research publications and presentations.
- Administrative Tasks
- Assist in organizing and coordinating academic events, seminars, or workshops.
- Other Duties as Assigned
- Assisting with maintaining algal and bacterial cultures.
- Refilling reagents and consumables.
- Managing lab inventory.
- Checking and restocking aliquots.
- Disposing of bacterial waste.
- Preparing general lab materials.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Part-Time. Student. 10 hours per week.
Salary Range: $18.50 per hour.
Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree. Current graduate student at American University. Good academic standing with a strong GPA. Less than 1 year of relevant experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to convey complex concepts in a clear and understandable manner. Familiarity with research methodologies, data analysis, and literature review. Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with students, faculty, and staff. Effective organizational and time management skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
Preferred Education and Experience: Prior experience in teaching and research.
