Department Description

The Graphic Designer will be central to shaping and delivering high quality visual communications for Wits Plus’s short courses. The role spans across conceptualisation, design, and production across digital and print channels, ensuring consistency with Wits Plus’s corporate identity and Wits University brand standards. The designer will collaborate closely with Marketing, Product, Operations, and external suppliers to provide design support to campaigns, social and paid media, events, and thought-leadership content, driving brand visibility and enrolment growth.

Brief Description

Key Responsibilities

  1. Brand stewardship & creative conceptualisation
  • Develop creative concepts and execute visually compelling designs across all channels.
  • Maintain consistent application of the Wits Plus corporate identity and Wits University brand guidelines.
  • Create and manage templates, styles, and brand-aligned design systems.
  1. Campaign design & marketing collateral
  • Design complete asset suites for marketing campaigns (digital banners, social tiles, posters, flyers, slide decks, brochures, and promotional materials).
  • Translate campaign objectives into strong visual narratives that resonate with target audiences.
  1. Digital, social & email design
  • Produce platform-specific graphics for social media, digital advertising, and email marketing.
  • Prepare visuals for monthly content calendars and adapt designs for multiple audiences and placements.
  • Optimise assets for performance, readability, and brand consistency.
  1. Print & events design
  • Design materials for exhibitions, workshops, conferences, and open days (invitations, pullups, backdrops, programmes, signage, aid memoire, digital screens).
  • Liaise with print suppliers and manage pre-press requirements, colour proofing, and quality checks.
  1. Multimedia & motion graphics
  • Edit short-form videos for social media, testimonials, and event highlights.
  • Create simple animations, transitions, intros, and text-based motion assets.
  1. Collaboration & workflow management
  • Work closely with the Marketing Manager and internal stakeholders to interpret briefs, refine concepts, and meet deadlines.
  • Coordinate with external agencies and suppliers to ensure high-quality output and brand alignment.
  1. Asset management & compliance
  • Maintain the central marketing asset repository, including source files, final artwork, photography, and templates.
  • Ensure correct version control, file naming, and organised storage for team accessibility.
  • Ensure all visuals comply with POPIA and adhere to usage rights and licensing requirements.
  1. Quality assurance & continuous improvement
  • Review and refine artwork prior to release to ensure accuracy, consistency, and professional standards.
  • Incorporate learnings and feedback to improve design quality and engagement performance.

Qualifications & Skills

  • A diploma or bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, and/or a related field (added advantage).
  • 3-5 years of professional design experience in an agency or in-house environment.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects independently and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating conceptual thinking, multi-format design skills, and polished execution.

Technical Competencies

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud:
  • Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign (core)
  • After Effects and/or Premiere Pro (advantageous)
  • Strong layout, typography, and visual hierarchy skills.
  • Understanding of digital and social media design requirements.
  • Knowledge of pre-press, colour profiling, and print production processes.
  • Competence in PowerPoint for presentation design.
  • Familiarity with Canva, Figma, or similar tools is an advantage.
