"Hastie Fellow"

The Hastie Fellowship is a two-year program that supports aspiring scholars preparing for a career in law teaching. The term and internal sequence of the fellowship are designed to accommodate the needs for intensive research and writing, applying to the legal teaching job market, and gaining teaching experience. During the term of the appointment, Fellows are required to be in residence in Madison with a commitment to participating fully in the life of the Law School.

Fellowship would begin summer/early fall of 2026. Specific start date would be upon mutual agreement of UW Law School and successful candidate.

The Hastie Fellowship program supports aspiring scholars preparing for a career in law teaching. The Fellowship reflects the Law School's commitment to creating opportunities for people who might not otherwise have the chance to become law professors. It began as an effort to address discrimination and the lack of diversity in the legal academy. Over the decades, many Hastie Fellows have gone on to become leading legal scholars, teachers and lawyers.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of mentors and with faculty support, Hastie Fellows will: engage in intensive research and writing, publish research, gain teaching experience, and participate in the legal teaching job market and recruitment process.

Hastie Fellows are appointed for a term of two years.

The first year of the program is devoted primarily to scholarship. By the fall semester of the second year, Fellows should be sufficiently advanced in their research to apply to the legal teaching market. In addition to supporting Fellows on the teaching market, the second year of the program focuses on teaching experience and publication of the Fellow's research.

Compensation:

$75,000 per year along with a research support fund (currently $3,500 per year for each year of the fellowship). In addition to the stipend, the Law School furnishes support services including a private office with a desktop computer, printer, office supplies and photocopying.

Required Qualifications:

Excellent legal writing and research skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education:

JD degree from an accredited American law school highly preferred. If law degree is not a JD, candidates with multiple years of experience practicing law in the U.S. may be considered.

Applications for the Fall 2026 Hastie Fellowship Program will be reviewed on a rolling basis. To ensure full consideration, applications should be submitted by November 16, 2025, but applications will be accepted until filled.

1) Letter of Interest: Please discuss how your life experiences have guided your desire to become a legal scholar and teacher, and how your participation would contribute to the Program's goals.

2) Resume or curriculum vitae.

3) Research proposal: Please describe, in two to three single-spaced pages, the research you plan to pursue during the Hastie Fellowship. In addition to describing your general research interests, the proposal should identify two specific scholarly works that you expect to develop during your time in residence.

Also required will be three references' email contact information, submitted through the Jobs at UW website. Law School HR will send requests for reference letters during the interview process.
