Position Summary
The head baseball coaching position at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is one of the premier opportunities in NCAA Division I baseball. UNO, located in the heart of one of the nation’s top baseball communities and co-host of the Men’s College World Series, features a nationally recognized home venue in Maverick Park, which operates within an athletics department committed to competitive excellence, student-athlete development, and innovative holistic support. With new, $12.5 million Baseball and Softball Clubhouse and $55 million Training Facility projects in process, robust performance support, strong institutional alignment, and an energized fan and donor base, the next leader of Omaha Baseball will have the resources, vision, and momentum to compete for conference titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.
General:
This individual will be responsible for the oversight, organization and direction of our NCAA Division I Baseball Program. Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to: identifying and hiring a capable staff; recruiting; retaining qualified student-athletes capable of competing and succeeding at the NCAA Division I level; organizing and planning training; developing a competitive schedule; building a championship level culture within the program; managing student-athlete financial packaging; monitoring student-athlete academic progress; complying with all NCAA, Summit League, and institutional regulations; budget management; participation in community outreach activities; fundraising; and assisting with the promotion of the program, Omaha Athletics, and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct oversight of all baseball program staff members; with the staff, plan and direct the training of their student athletes; assesses student-athlete skills and design strategies to enhance each player’s skills; works directly with student athletes at practices; teach and demonstrate proper techniques; facilitate game preparation; manage in-game adjustments and decisions.
- Evaluate, determine and direct the priorities of the baseball program including budget preparation, equipment purchasing, team travel, practice scheduling, and game schedules.
- Demonstrate concern for the academic pursuits of the student athletes by working closely with the Student-Athlete Development staff to ensure adherence to department, university and NCAA academic policies, as well as initiate and monitor personal academic goals for each individual. This includes setting individual graduation rate goals and meeting the NCAA APR benchmark for the program. Study, know and follow all relevant University, Summit League and NCAA policies and procedures.
- Direct, monitor, and be actively involved in the process of evaluating, recruiting, and developing student-athletes capable of competitive success in the Summit League and nationally.
- Engage external stakeholders, including donors, sponsors, ticket holders and media in support of the Baseball Program by fostering productive relationships and UNO, maintaining a constant presence in the local community.
Impact on the Organization:
The Baseball Head Coach will manage an operational budget near $250,000 and manage a team consisting of at least 2 FTE positions and work alongside the Athletic Performance staff with units supporting the program including biomechanics, sports science, sport psychology, sports nutrition, physical therapy, athletic training and strength and performance.
Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institute of higher education.
Required Experience
- Must show demonstrated success in coaching.
- The coach must exhibit exemplary communication skills with staff, student-athletes, administration, media, faculty, and the community. He or she must be able to instruct the skills related to baseball at a high level, motivate student-athletes, and display a strong knowledge of the sport, game techniques and personnel management. The coach must also possess the vision of what a championship caliber NCAA Division I program should look like and possess the drive to execute.
