Applications are invited for a highly experienced and motivated Head of Animal Research Facilities to oversee the operational and strategic management of animal research facilities at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. This senior leadership role within University Biomedical Services (UBS) is critical in ensuring world-class animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across multiple facilities that support groundbreaking biomedical research.

Working closely with the UBS Facilities Director, you will provide strategic leadership to facility managers and senior staff, ensuring the efficient operation of state-of-the-art facilities. The role oversees a team of over 60 staff, managing complex research environments that support over 200,000 regulated procedures annually across diverse animal species.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and oversight for UBS animal research facilities, managing facility managers and senior technical staff.
  • Drive strategic development, planning, and operational efficiency, ensuring research facilities align with long-term objectives.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and Home Office regulations.
  • Oversee budgetary planning and financial sustainability.
  • Develop and maintain high standards of animal care, supporting research excellence.
  • Lead infrastructure projects and oversee capital equipment investments.
  • Foster a collaborative environment, working with researchers, external institutions, and key stakeholders.
  • Ensure robust health, safety, and security measures are in place for facility operations.

We seek a dynamic leader with:

  • Extensive experience in managing large-scale laboratory animal research facilities.
  • Proven leadership and management skills, including oversight of large teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory frameworks governing animal research.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budget planning and cost recovery.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • A degree in a relevant scientific discipline (or equivalent experience).

The role is available immediately, subject to a 9-month probationary period. Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment and a security check.
