The National Art School is seeking an experienced and visionary academic leader to head our Painting Department. This role leads one of Australia’s most respected studio‑based programs, shaping the next generation of contemporary painters while stewarding the School’s pedagogical excellence, artistic rigour, and vibrant studio culture.

This position (full-time Head of Painting, Senior Lecturer Level D) is offered on a five-year secondment, with the possibility of renewal for subsequent terms, subject to a successful performance review, or reversion to the underlying permanent substantive position (Lecturer C).

Salary range for Senior Lecturer Level D role: $139,265 to $152,670 plus leave loading, plus superannuation (total package range from $157,851 to $173,046)

About the Position

The Head of Painting is responsible for developing and leading Painting curriculum in the BFA course and collaborating with the Head of Postgraduate Studies to support Painting in postgraduate courses, including the BFA(Hons), MFA and DFA degrees. The Full-time Head of Painting works with the other Heads of Departments and Heads of Programs to deliver academic and research support to students.

The Head of Painting provides academic leadership and management of the Painting courses, including line management of permanent staff, sessional staff, and technicians. The position manages resource allocation including studios, budget oversight, and management of related learning and teaching materials.

In keeping with minimum standards for Academic Levels under the Australian Higher Education – Academic Staff – Award 2020, staff employed at this level can normally be expected to make original and innovative contributions to the advancement of scholarship, research and teaching in their discipline.
