Position Overview

We are seeking an aspirational IT leader looking to make their mark and lead technology change within the IT Services department and across Massey University.

We have a new CIO providing strategic leadership and vision for our IT function that needs modernising and preparation for a very different future in higher education. We have designed and implemented a new operating model. The CIO is building a talented, energetic and enthusiastic senior leadership team for this critical component of the University’s operation.

This is a full-time position and while the team is based on our Palmerston North campus the role could be based at our Wellington campus.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

The Head of Technology leads the delivery of the core technology services that underpin all IT and digital services consumed by the University’s staff and students. The position is responsible for advising the CIO on matters of IT strategy and for leading the implementation of strategic technology services improvement programmes.

The position oversees a number of technology teams with responsibility for the full lifecycle of technology services (including design, build, procure, evaluate, deploy, operate/support, maintain/improve, and retire) and contribution to the technology roadmap.

A key consideration for the Technology function and its teams will be the balance of benefits (and associated costs) to be achieved by the mix of on-premises, cloud, and vendor provided services.

The Head of Technology will have accountability for the quality and performance of technology services provided, ensuring these are aligned to the current and future needs of the organisation (both technical and financial), and that initiatives to improve and transform technology services are identified, evaluated, prioritised delivered in line with the overall IT strategy.

Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

  • Manage the provision of technology-based services to meet defined organisational needs.
  • Coordinate information and technology strategies where the adoption of a common approach would benefit the organisation.
  • Provide authoritative advice and direction in a specialist area.
  • Identify and assess new and emerging technologies, products, services, methods and techniques.
  • Align an organisations technology strategy with its business mission, strategy, and processes and documenting this using architectural models.
  • Influence stakeholder attitudes, decisions, and actions for mutual benefit.
  • Improve organisational performance by developing the performance of individuals and workgroups to meet agreed objectives with measurable results.
  • Enhance employee engagement and ways of working, empowering employees and supporting their health and wellbeing.

Ko koe tēnei | Who You Are

You will have the following skills, expertise, and experience:

  • A tertiary qualification in an IT or business management subject, or equivalent extensive industry experience.
  • Industry certification in IT Service Management at a practitioner or manager level.
  • Recent experience in senior leadership roles within an IT department, either as the CIO/CTO/CDO of a mid-sized IT function, or a senior leader within a larger IT function reporting to the CIO/CTO/CDO or equivalent exec-level leader.
  • Minimum 12 years’ experience within IT or IT-related positions, with a deep background in managing IT Infrastructure services.
  • Experience in delivering and operating technology service using a blend of internal, cloud provider, and vendor/3rd party services and managing vendor/partner relationships.
  • Proven track record of managing and successfully delivering technology transformation initiatives.
  • Demonstrable familiarity with current strategic issues facing IT departments (preferably in a university or NZ government context).
  • Experience in business services and process improvement.
