Budgeted Salary: The budgeted base salary range for this position is $123,218 to $141,579 per annum.

We seek a Health and Safety Specialist with experience working in a large, interdisciplinary facility with complex instrumentation and labs. This position is within the SoE and interfaces with a variety of subject matter experts within the University’s Environmental Health and Safety Department. The candidate will be a key contributor to the School’s Culture of Safety and work as part of a collaborative team of Building Managers, Lab Managers, faculty, and students.
The Health and Safety Specialist is assigned a geographical area within the SoE and is the primary point of contact for health and safety issues within this area. The person in this role will develop relationships with area personnel and will support them in their efforts to be safe and healthy. The Health and Safety Specialist is considered a generalist and will perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment for both students and staff. The person in this role will implement EHS programs working side-by-side with researchers, will implement new ideas to provide safety support within our buildings, and most importantly will develop relationships with researchers for open communication. Our environment of cutting edge research ensures that you will learn and innovate with each new project.
This position will primarily support the Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Civil and Environmental Engineering departments.
In this role you:
- Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk based computer tasks.
- Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
- Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
- Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.
- May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals
- May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.
Preferred Requirements:
- A professional certification (CIH, CSP and/or CHMM) or advanced EH&S-related degree is desirable
- Experience within the research, biotechnology, energy, or environmental profession is desired
Core Duties:
- Develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.
- May develop and conduct employee and student training, education, and awareness of environmental, safety and health activities, and/or programs.
- Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, and radiological) that could be present in the work area; remediate hazards, and/or recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place.
- Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazard potential.
- Provide technical advice and university interpretation of various government regulations and university policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations.
- May act as a lead or technical expert, and provide direction to less experienced personnel working on health/safety programs.
Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field
Minimum Experience:
Three years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
- Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
- Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
Drivers License Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License.
- Ability to drive day and night.
- When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.
