Your opportunity:

Working as part of the Environmental Health & Safety team and reporting to the Manager Chemical Safety and Compliance (MCSS), the Technician supports the operations of the Legionella testing laboratory, associated sample collection, analysis and results dissemination. Under the direction of the MCSS, the Technician coordinates with building operations and the Manager of Joint Health & Safety Committees on plumbing flushes and related communications. The Technician provides support to Health & Safety Officers with inspections of laboratory spaces, such as fume hoods, physical infrastructure, WHMIS and other hazardous materials or equipment, safety inspections, and laboratory visits to assess occupant issues.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies used in Legionella testing; operate lab equipment
  • Proactive maintenance of equipment, creating and editing a standard operating procedures, troubleshoot technical hurdles as well as communicate these challenges to management and facilities/property management.
  • Providing advice to others on hazardous material management practices and procedures
  • Investigating and reporting on health, safety and regulatory non-compliance occurrences, recording reported safety issues and resolving or referring for resolution
  • Conducting routine inspections of assigned facilities and equipment.

Essential Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (e.g. science, life sciences) or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience. Minimum four (4) years' relevant experience, including experience in a university environment with hazardous chemicals and provision of safety services. Experience with assessing compliance during visits in permitted labs using a predefined checklist and working with and providing reports to compliance inspectors. Be willing to pursue professional Memberships/affiliations in one or more of: Association of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, Occupational Hygiene Association of Ontario, or in the process of obtaining. Knowledge and hands on experience with instrument analysis, quality control, optimizing workflow and interpreting/communicating results. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a larger team. Strong communication skills both verbal and written. Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow established process.

Assets (Nonessential):

Professional Certification such as Safety Engineering/Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Health and Safety/Biosafety (one or more of CRSP, CIH/ROH) or in the process of obtaining. Professional Memberships/Affiliations in one or more of: Association of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, Occupational Hygiene Association of Ontario or in the process of obtaining. Knowledge and hands on experience with setting up a PCR laboratory, collecting and storing samples, and conducting PCR assays.
