Health Psychologist (Consultation-Liaison Division)- Instructor/Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at CUMC

Full time position is available for a psychologist to work in transplant as part of the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry division. The clinician will be primarily assigned to work in renal transplantation and work alongside transplant nephrologists, nurse practitioners and social workers in a liaison-role. Most of the work will be in the outpatient clinic setting with some inpatient consultation.

  • The psychologist will provide assessments of adult candidates for renal transplant
  • The psychologist will provide some follow up as needed in the evaluation phase and post renal transplant especially as a bridge to more chronic mental health care. A stepped-care approach will be applied, with collaborative care with social workers, nurse practitioners and transplant psychiatrists.
  • The psychologist will be a dedicated liaison to the renal team and attend selection committee and quality improvement meetings to provide their insight and recommendations.
  • The psychologist may also evaluate a select group of kidney donor candidates for surgery
  • The psychologist may also cross cover for inpatient evaluations for the three psychiatrists dedicated to other transplant groups in heart, liver and lung.

The faculty member will be part of the clinical, research and educational mission of transplant psychiatry through the CL Psychiatry Division at Columbia. The applicant should have some experience with conducting diagnostic interviews and administering and reviewing scales. Applicants should have knowledge of both cognitive behavioral and motivational interviewing techniques. Applicants should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well across disciplines and function effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Our faculty serve as part of multi-disciplinary teams with ample opportunities to learn from and consult with colleagues. There are also professional development funds available to faculty to support licensure renewals, as well as obtaining additional training, conference attendance, professional organization membership, and potentially supervise/provide didactics to trainees.

Faculty will have opportunities to attend case conferences, peer supervision, and Grand Rounds at CUIMC.

  • Demonstrate interest in the psychological care of patients with medical illness
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team setting
  • Demonstrate interest in academic as well as clinical psychiatry
  • Additional preference to applications with interest in research and quality improvement
  • Additional preference to applicants who are bilingual in Spanish
  • PsyD or PhD in Clinical Psychology
  • New York State license required
  • Candidates may be required to obtain a New Jersey license
  • For psychologists, Instructor level requires graduation from an APA-accredited doctoral program in Clinical Psychology, and completion of an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship program
