About our team/Mō te tīma

Since its establishment in 1905 the Department of Physiology has grown to become one of the largest Departments in the University, home to approximately 80 staff. We make major contributions to the undergraduate and postgraduate education of students in science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, medical lab sciences, nutrition, and physical education.

The role/Te mahi

We are seeking a highly motivated HeartOtago Biorepository Coordinator who will be responsible for the day-to-day managing of the HeartOtago biorepository, associated databases, tissue collection and HeartOtago activities to join our team. 

Duties will include:

•  Adhering to tikanga Māori principles

•  Obtaining informed consent from patients entering the HeartOtago biorepository

•  Liaising with patients, clinical and research staff

•  Managing data collection and storage, and tissue collection, storage and disposal

•  Assist in coordinating HeartOtago research and outreach activities when required

•  Ensuring activities are performed in compliance with the HeartOtago SOPs, human ethics and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

Successful candidates will preferably have:

•  A BSc (Physiology), or a NZ Certificate in Science, or a National Diploma of Science, or an equivalent qualification, or equivalent experience

•  Experience of working within a large team environment with multiple stakeholders 

•  Experience in data entry, database management, Word and Excel skills

•  Great time management and organisational skills

•  Flexibility to work out of hours on occasion

•  Knowledge of HDEC standards on human research and biobanking, along with some Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training, or experience with working with patients or the health system. 

•  Some laboratory experience (making buffers, tissue fixation and freezing of tissue)

•  The ability to build and maintain interpersonal relationships with a range of people, with a good sense of aroha or compassion for others

Our ideal candidate will have basic knowledge of te reo Māori and a strong understanding of tikanga Māori, with a commitment to practice in a manner consistent with the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours), fixed term (3 year) position. The position is available from 1 April 2026 and is based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
