About the programme

At the beginning of your studies in Heritage Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, you will be allocated a supervisor(s) that you will work with towards developing your research project all the way to completion.

Programme Structure

Structure:

The PhD is awarded on the basis of a thesis only.
This thesis must constitute a substantial contribution to the advancement of new knowledge in the subject chosen as such, the degree demands the capacity to pursue independent research and analysis at the highest level.

We are not aware of any specific GRE, GMAT or GPA grading score requirements for this programme.

English requirements

TOEFL® iBT — 100. TOEFL iBT® is accepted by more than 13,000 universities and other institutions in over 160 countries. The test can be taken at a test center or at home. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.

General requirements

A master’s degree from Wits or another university with a 70% total mark minimum aggregate. (Candidates with aggregates between 60% and 69% may be considered under special circumstances.)
A supervisor from the Faculty of Humanities must be identified and approached prior to application.

Living costs

Johannesburg, South Africa: 729-1,040 AUD / month. The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
