High-frequency underwater acoustic communication for image transmission
About the Project
Communication using acoustic waves is the main underwater communication technology, since electro-magnetic waves quickly attenuate underwater. Most of existing underwater acoustic communication systems operate at frequencies 5 – 50 KHz propagating up to several kilometres in distance, albeit at low data rates, so the video transmission is not possible. The aim of this project is to use higher acoustic frequencies (e.g. 100 KHz – 1 MHz) and develop communication techniques allowing the video transmission at as high distance as possible, e.g., up to hundreds of meters. This activity will be based on using underwater channel models developed in the Underwater Information Systems Group at York, and recent results on development and experimental investigation of underwater acoustic techniques and devices within this Group. The student should be well familiar with signal processing and communication techniques, corresponding mathematics and Matlab programming. The techniques developed in the project will be tested in the university water tank, lake and sea experiments.
It is also possible to do this research as a MSc by Research project.
