About the History Program
The history program at Hollins empowers students with critical reading and analytical writing skills through engaging courses aimed at providing all students with the opportunity to discover themselves and the world around them through knowledge of history. History is one of the top majors at Hollins, and students have a strong track record of earning research and writing awards; competitive national fellowships and scholarships; admission to top graduate programs; and employment in history-related fields including teaching, librarianship, and museum education. History faculty contribute to the university’s general education curriculum and to interdisciplinary programs such as Gender and Women’s Studies, International Studies, Environmental Studies, and Public Health. With a small number of faculty, there has been significant progress in recent years in diversifying the curriculum by adding courses in areas such as global slavery, poverty, transgender and queer history, and the history of witchcraft.
Role Responsibilities
- Teach six courses/year
- Offer a variety of history courses on modern Europe and its global interconnections, from the introductory to advanced level, including the Modern Europe survey
- Contribute to the university’s general education program, the Core
- Perform service at the departmental and university level
- Mentor and advise students
Position Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- Ph.D. in history in hand by July 1, 2027
- An active research agenda focused in twentieth-century Europe and its global interconnections
- Preparation to teach courses from the introductory to advanced level on modern Europe and its global interconnections
- Demonstrated commitment to creating learning environments that support every student
The preferred candidate will have:
- Research or teaching experience in one or more of the following: environmental history, history of empire and decolonization, or public history
- Ability to teach a history course focused on one or more of the following: modern Africa, modern Latin America, or modern Pacific or Indian Ocean worlds

- A curriculum vitae
Candidates advanced to the second stage of review will be invited to submit the following materials:
- A statement that explains the candidate’s teaching philosophy and their commitment to creating a learning environment that supports every student
- A writing sample of no more than 30 pages that demonstrates the candidate’s research (e.g., a published or in-progress article or book chapter, a conference paper, or a dissertation chapter)
- A sample syllabus
- An unofficial copy of graduate school transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which can speak to the candidate’s teaching experience and at least one of which can speak to the candidate’s research agenda
Candidates who proceed to the final interview stage will be asked for contact information for three references.

The selected candidate will be asked to submit official transcripts to the Office of the Provost, and once they accept a contingent employment offer, a criminal history background check will be conducted. Additionally, the selected candidate must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis, and Hollins University will not sponsor employment visas for this role.
