Histotechnician - Anatomic Pathology (CVM)

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks two Histotechnicians to join the Anatomic Pathology team at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center. The Anatomic Pathology Histotechnician thrives in an outcome-driven environment with clear deadlines, enjoys working on advanced, routine and detailed tasks, and can identify and troubleshoot problems using standard operating procedures. They are extremely reliable, flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads, and work well under pressure in a team-based environment.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform routine to moderate histopathology, which includes trimming, processing, embedding, and sectioning of tissues.
  • Perform routine to moderate histology stains, including H&E and special stains. This may also include performing Immunohistochemistry stains and in-Situ-Hybridization stains depending on experience.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform basic troubleshooting of equipment used throughout the histology, trim room, necropsy, TSE laboratory areas.
  • Serve as a resource to all pathologists, residents, students, staff, and research investigators.
  • Clearly communicate directly with supervisor(s) any problems that develop, and actions taken for resolution.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in a science related field, with up to two years of relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Works well both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two to three years of experience working in a diagnostic or research Histopathology facility
  • Strong background in anatomy.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.
  • Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.
  • This position is 39 hours per week, Monday through Friday. While normal business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays and scheduled breaks.

Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship, and fosters economic growth.

Anatomic Pathology (AP) offers comprehensive diagnostic services including post-mortem examination, histopathology, biopsy evaluation, and diagnostic immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization. They expertly process and evaluate specimens from a wide range of species at the request of veterinarians to aid in the identification of injury and disease that can threaten the life of a single animal or an entire population.
