JOB TITLE: Head Lifeguard - Athletics
JOB PURPOSE: Responsibility of this position is to serve as manager on duty in the absence of the Aquatic Facility Director, plus provide a safe swimming environment for the public. In-service training sessions are required. Reports to the Aquatic Facility Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, applying first aid, and performing water rescues as necessary.
- Be a leader, helpful, and set an example for all lifeguards.
- Keeps Aquatics Facility Director well informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments, and/or repairs.
- Inspect the aquatic facility on a daily schedule and report unsafe conditions and equipment to the Aquatics Facility Director.
- Assists with the scheduling of lifeguards to ensure the adequate coverage of pool areas are maintained during opening hours.
- Assist Aquatics Facility Director as a public relations specialist
- Assist Aquatics Facility Director with weekly in-service training. Provide positive feedback to lifeguards.
- Directly oversees facility, supervises, and provides leadership for all employees when Aquatics Facility Director is not present.
- Help with special events, as assigned.
- Performs the work of lower-level aquatics staff as needed.
- Must be able to work weekends, and over holiday breaks.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: High School Degree or equivalent
- Experience: 1 year of Lifeguarding Experience
- Certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor
Must be able to swim proficiently. Must have clear verbal communication skills. At least 1-year previous aquatic experience including Lifeguarding and public relations. Must have a demonstrated ability to deal with staff and the public in a positive manner, e.g. must be tactful, consistent, and firm when enforcing pool rules and administering discipline. Must be able to enforce departmental policies. Must attend the pre-season aquatic staff training. Must be dependable, confident, self-motivated, outgoing, energetic, and ability to problem solve. Must be comfortable working with people of all ages and occasionally difficult work situations. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with department standards. Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
