Position Highlights

The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix (College) is looking for individuals to serve as house advisors. The College provides a collaborative and comprehensive approach to career advising which relies upon two distinct groups of advisors: longitudinal career advisors (house advisors) and clinical specialty advisors (CSA). The house advisor partners with the CSAs to help students prepare for a successful match into their desired specialty via 1:1 student advising, creation and curation of specialty specific resources and contribution to the broader advising program. House advisors are expected to promote academic excellence, guide student decision making that provides opportunities for successful career development and support personal and professional growth. The house advisor performs their assigned duties under the supervision of the director of advising and in collaboration with the associate dean of student affairs.

This 0.25 FTE role is expected to be 500 hours/annually. Each house will consist of ~130 medical students who are divided between two house advisors (65 students per advisor). On site presence and availability will be expected in collaboration with Office of Student Affairs. It is a one-year position that will be renewed annually based on performance.

The successful candidate(s) will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching, clinical service and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advise assigned students longitudinally across all four years to support their academic progression, specialty exploration and early match preparation.
  • Conduct individual student meetings with advisees twice yearly to review student dashboard and provide constructive feedback to guide professional development.
  • Document student meetings and key communications via an electronic student records system.
  • Contribute to collaborative team meetings and student review processes to identify at-risk students and recommend strategies to meet individual student needs.
  • Contribute to the creation and facilitation of curricular sessions related to career exploration, professional development and match preparation.
  • Advise students on academic and policy related matters which can impact student progression, including course failures, USMLE failures and delays and leaves of absence.
  • Serve as the primary faculty advisor for undifferentiated 3rd and 4th year students.
  • Maintain working knowledge of, and refer students to, College-based resources as needed.
  • Recognize signs of student distress (academic and behavioral) and connect students with appropriate resource(s).
  • Remain available to students and advising team during Match week to support students through SOAP (typically, third week of March).
  • Spearhead social engagement activities for assigned academic house to create opportunities for bonding and community building within the house and across class cohorts.
  • Supervise and oversee peer mentorship activities within the academic house.
  • Contribute to shared duties which support the functions of the Advising program and Office of Student Affairs; this may include providing cross coverage for other house advisors and participating in relevant workgroups or committees.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Office of Student Affairs and/or Office of the Dean.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Have an MD, DO or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Be clinically active.
  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development in areas relevant to academic medicine.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have completed residency/fellowship in the past 5-10 years.
  • Be recognized by faculty and students as a role model and have a strong working knowledge of match process.
  • Be actively engaged with specialty specific professional organization(s) relevant to their assigned specialty and subspecialties.
