Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
This part-time, temporary position provides front-of-house leadership and exceptional customer service for events at Kenan Auditorium, Beckwith Recital Hall, and Mainstage Theatre. Duties include coordinating volunteers, supervising ushers and ticket takers, managing patron flow and accessibility, and supporting a safe and welcoming audience experience. Hours vary based on event schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver outstanding customer service to UNCW Arts patrons
- Assist with recruitment, training, and supervision of volunteer ushers
- Support collaborative volunteer programs with Thalian Hall and Wilson Center
- Lead pre-event usher meetings and assign duties
- Oversee lobby setup, program distribution, and event-specific activities
- Ensure patron safety, comfort, and ADA compliance
- Coordinate front-of-house operations with the Stage Manager and Technical Director
- Respond to emergencies per UNCW and Kenan Auditorium protocols
- Complete post-event House Manager reports
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Two or more years in house management or customer service
- Able to lift 25 lbs, climb stairs, and stand for long periods
- Organized, diplomatic, self-directed, and strong multitasker
- Flexible availability (nights, weekends, holidays, long hours)
- Excellent written and verbal communication with diverse groups
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, web-based scheduling tools, and problem-solving
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- Experience in house management, front-of-house operations, or event management
- Supervising volunteers, ushers, or customer service teams
- Working in performing arts venues or live event environments
- Familiarity with theatre etiquette, policies, and patron services

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
UNCW's Office of the Arts enriches the campus and Wilmington community through diverse cultural programming that highlights the university's intellectual and creative life. The Office of the Arts coordinates campus-wide cultural activities, including UNCW Presents, manages Kenan Auditorium and the Cultural Arts Building, and serves as a liaison to local, regional, and national arts partners.
