Position Description
Brookhaven Lab's Guest Services Division seeks a Temporary Housing Custodian to join their team. Under general supervision, performs general cleaning and housekeeping duties in Housing facilities.
The hours of operation/shift for this position are 8:00am - 4:30pm. This individual must be available for the entire duration of the position, from May 26th, 2026 to August 14th, 2026.This position reports to the Residence Services Custodian Supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and otherwise clean floors and surfaces in assigned areas.
- Clean and disinfect bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, guest rooms, and other assigned spaces.
- Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash and recycling.
- Wash dishes and clean kitchen or service areas, as assigned.
- Make beds and prepare rooms, as applicable.
- Move furniture, supplies, and equipment, as needed, to support cleaning, housekeeping, and room setup activities.
- Inspect assigned work areas and identify needed repairs, maintenance issues, safety hazards, and other deficiencies; report such issues to management.
- Follow written instructions, work orders, cleaning procedures, and applicable safety requirements in the performance of assigned duties.
- Read and follow OSHA Safety Data Sheets and other job-related documents applicable to cleaning materials and equipment.
- Provide courteous, responsive, and professional service to customers; work effectively with coworkers and supervisors to address service needs and operational priorities.
- Perform other related custodial and housekeeping duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of one year of custodial, housekeeping, or equivalent professional cleaning experience.
- Valid New York State driver's license.
- Demonstrated customer-service orientation and ability to interact effectively and professionally with customers, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to read and understand written instructions, work orders, labels, and other job-related documents.
- Basic computer skills and ability to complete required computer-based training.
Environmental, Health and Safety Requirements
Must meet medical requirements of the position, including but not limited to...
- Standing, bending, and lifting
- Moderate lifting < 30 lbs.
- Ability to climb portable ladders
- Able to work in warm environments
- Have good physical coordination dexterity and balance
- Able to use power operated hand tools
- Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, shoes, and hearing protection
- Must be able to successfully complete all required job training within the established timeframe after hire.
- Must meet the medical requirements of the applicable Job Assessment Form.
- Must comply with all Laboratory safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Must maintain a current phone number for call-out and contact purposes.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends, and other hours, as required by operational needs.

Term appointment may be extended based on business needs and management discretion.

The starting salary for this position is $25.26.
