HPC Systems Engineer
Job Description
The University of Pennsylvania, a world-renowned Ivy League institution, is seeking a highly qualified HPC Systems Engineer for the Penn Advanced Research Computing Center (PARCC). This role involves strategic planning, design, testing, and implementation of cutting-edge technology for HPC-AI environments.
Job Responsibilities
- Collaborate with senior staff to design, plan, test, and implement advanced hardware solutions for HPC-AI environments.
- Deploy and configure physical hardware using tools like Ansible.
- Ensure high availability and minimal downtime of HPC resources.
- Optimize, monitor, and troubleshoot HPC file systems.
- Conduct system benchmarking and develop automated testing.
- Maintain job scheduling systems and enforce storage policies.
- Administer the Slurm scheduler.
- Participate in network and security operations with the university's central networking group.
- Apply HPC networking configurations and security protocols.
- Maintain a secure, stable system/software environment.
- Implement data security controls.
- Operate comprehensive monitoring systems.
- Automate user account lifecycle processes.
- Install and maintain HPC tools like Coldfront.
- Manage hardware and software inventory with vendors.
- Establish collaborations for asset information.
- Provide technical guidance on new HPC-AI projects.
- Develop custom tools and contribute to open-source communities.
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies.
- Assess tools for integration into HPC clusters.
- Mentor and train staff.
- Participate in training programs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience as a systems engineer, or equivalent.
- Expertise in Infiniband networking.
- Experience with Slurm for job and resource management.
- Experience deploying HPC portals like OpenOnDemand, Cryo-EM, Coldfront.
- Familiarity with scientific software deployment tools like Spack and Easybuild.
- Expertise with cluster management software like xCAT and BCM.
- Experience deploying, troubleshooting, and maintaining file systems.
