HR Generalist
Department Information
The Office of Educational Affairs at the Indiana University School of Medicine supports students throughout their medical education journey while also providing faculty with resources and guidance related to curriculum development, program assessment, student evaluation, and learning technology. This position serves as the primary HR contact for the Dean's Office within Educational Affairs, partnering with leadership to provide strategic and day-to-day human resources support that promotes operational effectiveness, employee engagement, and a positive employee experience across assigned areas.
Job Summary
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Partners with department leadership to provide strategic and day-to-day HR consultation on employee relations, performance management, conflict resolution, engagement, and workforce planning matters for appointed staff and academic positions.
- Advises managers on performance concerns, disciplinary actions, corrective action documentation, and policy interpretation to ensure consistent application of university policies and compliance with employment laws and regulations.
- Leads and supports employee relations activities, including workplace investigations, resolution of employee concerns, and guidance related to FMLA, attendance, accommodations, workers compensation, and other complex HR matters.
- Collaborates with hiring managers on recruitment strategies, position planning, candidate evaluation, onboarding, and hiring processes to support effective talent acquisition and a positive candidate and employee experience.
- Utilizes workforce data, trends, and HR metrics to support organizational effectiveness, retention strategies, staffing decisions, and continuous improvement of HR programs, processes, and operations.
- Partners with leaders and HR Centers of Excellence (COEs) to implement and support HR initiatives, including performance management, employee engagement, organizational change, learning initiatives, and process improvements.
- Supports operational effectiveness within assigned departments by advising on organizational structure, role clarity, change management, and cross-functional HR processes while ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with institutional standards.
General Responsibilities
- Counsels academic and/or staff employees and management on various HR topics and functions; communicates and shares understanding of various human resource policies, procedures, laws, standards and other government regulations.
- Researches, responds to, and addresses various employee relation issues such as Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), employee complaints, workers compensation, etc.
- Develops in-depth knowledge and skill in various HR functions, in addition to growing knowledge in HR policies, procedures, and legal requirements to provide quality HR guidance to academic and/or staff employees and managers.
- Develops a thorough understanding of the operational strategy and culture for recruitment coordinator, school or department.
- Contributes and/or manages various academic and/or staff HR activities, projects, or initiatives, such as recruitment, onboarding, engagement, or performance management.
- Researches and stays up-to-date on relevant academic and/or HR topics.
- May conduct research and analysis for local/department HR team or centers of expertise (COE) partners and develops solutions and recommends course of action.
- May lead small projects or activities.
Qualifications
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
- Some experience in human resources or related field.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Preferred
- SHRM-CP/PHR within 1 year upon date of hire.
