IACUC Coordinator

This position will report to the Senior IACUC Coordinator(s). The IACUC has responsibility for evaluating and granting approvals for all research that involves vertebrate animals at DFCI. Under close direction, the Assistant IACUC Coordinator will assist in screening research protocols, drafting and/or overseeing all correspondence related to committee reviews, and following up on action items from meetings. Interacts with ARF managers, scientific staff and support personnel for the purpose of advising, directing and educating on matters related to vertebrate animal research. Works under close supervision with little latitude for independent judgment.

The IACUC Coordinator is instrumental in support of ACUC operations so as to meet its primary responsibility of protecting the rights and welfare of vertebrate animals used in research.

  1. Ensures that submitted research is reviewed efficiently and consistent with regulations by:
    • Having basic knowledge of and ability to apply PHS/USDA regulations
    • Helping to oversee the accurate and timely processing, tracking and filing of submissions to and actions by the ACUC
    • Effectively communicating with investigators, committee Chair and ACUC members
    • Obtaining and distributing information required for Chair, full committee or primary reviewer review, maintaining files, distributing minutes
  2. Maintains accurate records of ACUC actions by:
    • Assists with documenting communications with investigators, regulatory agencies and any others involved in the conduct of submitted research
    • Assists with maintaining filing and archiving systems that allow access to open and closed protocols
  3. Ensures that annual review of research is conducted appropriately and in a timely manner by:
    • Assists with ensuring that information submitted by investigators is adequate for effective review

High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Previous experience may be substituted for Bachelor’s degree. One year in a related field preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Basic knowledge of federal, state and local regulatory information regarding the use of vertebrate animals in research
  • Knowledge of scientific and medical concepts and terminology related to research
  • Basic knowledge of PHS/USDA regulations
  • Knowledge of personal computers with experience using various software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, databases)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical skills necessary to identify potential problems
  • Organization skills necessary to manage priorities and meet deadlines with multiple and complex tasks
  • Interpersonal skills and maturity to effectively and professionally interact with diverse personalities and disciplines using tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to envision how position fits into the department and Institute as a whole
  • The ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a high-pressure environment
