The College of Community and Global Health (CCGH) in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (RFHS) at the University of Manitoba (UM) invites applications from First Nations, Métis or Inuit scholars for the inaugural Professorship in Indigenous Health. This professorship is for a 5-year term, with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will be appointed in a full-time probationary tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position will commence 1 July 2026, or on a date mutually agreed upon.
Through collaborations with Ongomiizwin, the Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing, the CCGH enhances the ability of UM to support the independence, autonomy and authority of First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities, and fosters authentic engagement and relationship-building in research partnerships. The CCGH actively engages in the utilization of Indigenous knowledge for evidence-based and best-practice development in curriculum, clinical and research skills, and knowledge sharing.
Community engagement is not a stand-alone activity but underpins every aspect of the research, education, and service activities that occur in partnership with diverse Indigenous Communities, globally.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote social justice, clinical, epidemiologic or health system research in areas relevant to improving the health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples and communities;
- Participate in national and international peer-reviewed competitions for research funding relevant to Indigenous health;
- Develop an independent, community/team-based program of research to advance the health of Indigenous populations;
- Disseminate research findings through peer-review publications, and other knowledge translation, exchange, and mobilization activities;
- Undergraduate and graduate teaching, and graduate student/research trainee supervision and mentorship.
- Service within Ongomiizwin, the College of Community and Global Health, the University and the community;
- Pursue research that will lead to improved health and will ensure that high quality healthcare is available for Indigenous communities in Manitoba and beyond.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet the following criteria
- Canadian Citizen who identifies as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis;
- Hold a doctoral degree in population health, health economics, health services, health policy, public health, epidemiology, Indigenous studies, social sciences or related fields at the time of application;
- Show demonstrated excellence in Indigenous health research as evidenced in high quality research output, successful and promising research projects and programs, and significant contributions made in collaboration with Indigenous partners, and to the academic and/or clinical community at the local, national and/or international level;
- History of commitments to advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and UNDRIP, including experience with Nation-led research, Indigenous data governance, and relational accountability as core scholarly contributions, alongside traditional academic outputs;

- a 5 year research plan (3 page maximum) outlining: a) an independent, innovative research program in Indigenous Health; b) a statement of how the program aligns with the strategic priorities of the College of Community and Global Health; and c) its potential to attract funding and contribute to student training;
- a teaching philosophy statement (1 page maximum) that documents the applicant's experience in and/or approach to training and mentoring diverse students and the candidate's teaching philosophy, including engagement with Indigenous pedagogy and methodologies;
- a personal statement (1 page maximum) reflecting on the applicant's positionality, demonstrated commitment, and approach to issues pertaining to anti-racism and social justice (including principles of equity, access, and participation) in the following areas: teaching, research, and service;
- a description of experience with community engagement and approach (1 page maximum);
- the names and contact information of three referees, one of whom must be a community partner.
