About This Opportunity

The Academic Pathway Program offers a unique opportunity for Indigenous academics to develop their expertise in their field of research through an individualised career development plan over a 4 year, fixed term period.

Successful applicants will receive dedicated support, cultural leave, and professional development opportunities, while securing a position within a relevant Faculty or Research Institute to your discipline of study. This program is designed to create meaningful career progression within one of Australia’s leading universities.

The Indigenous Academic Pathway Program offers two streams of employment – pre-doctoral and post-doctoral. The Academic level will be offered to successful applicants commensurate with your skills and experience in research, service and engagement at either Levels A or B.

What will I be doing in the role?

For the Pre-Doctoral (PhD Pathway): In year one, you will be predominantly focused on research/HDR studies, with up to 5% workload dedicated to citizenship/service. In years two – four, you will spend 80-90% of your time focused on research/HDR studies, with the remainder of your time dedicated to citizenship/service and (if desired) teaching/learning.

For the Post-Doctoral (Academic Pathway): In years one and two, you will predominantly focused on research (or completing your studies), with the remainder of your time dedicated to citizenship/service, supervision and researcher development, and (if desired) teaching/learning.

Successful candidates will be matched with an organisational unit – within a Faculty, School, Institute, or Centre – which will be best placed to provide you with career support through training and mentorship in your related field of study, research or discipline.

What can I bring to the role?

As research focused academic, you will be supported and guided by more senior academic research staff with the expectation of an increasing degree of autonomy over time.

For the Pre-Doctoral (PhD Pathway) you must be an enrolled HDR student completing a PhD with an emerging research profile in the discipline area.

For the Post-Doctoral (Academic Pathway) you must hold a PhD (or be in the final stages of completion) with a developing profile in research in the discipline area.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of additional pre-employment checks which will be based on the requirements of your unique position and research discipline, and may include: education check, AHPRA registration, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification, blue card check, as well as providing the necessary documentation to confirm the legal right to work in Australia.
