Position Overview
With functional reporting to the Indigenous Directions Office, the Indigenous Outreach and Engagement Officer will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing outreach initiatives that strengthen relationships between Concordia University and Indigenous communities. This includes creating meaningful opportunities for Indigenous youth to engage with university research, faculty, and students within the Volt-Age initiative.

Working with relevant units across the University, the Indigenous Outreach and Engagement Officer will play a crucial role in fostering reciprocal partnerships, facilitating mentorship and learning experiences, and ensuring that Volt-Age’s research and outreach activities reflect Indigenous perspectives, values, and priorities. By connecting community knowledge with academic pathways, the Officer will help inspire the next generation of Indigenous scholars and leaders in sustainable technologies and innovation.

Note: Work-related travel expenses will be covered in accordance with Volt-Age policy.

Primary responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Youth Engagement Office, actively engage with Indigenous youth in communities and on-campus to raise awareness of university opportunities, particularly within disciplines connected to the Volt-Age research themes.
  • Design and coordinate on-campus experiences that invite Indigenous youth to explore university research spaces, meet faculty and students, and participate in hands-on learning that connects academic disciplines to real-world impact.
  • Bring Concordia’s research to community by organizing outreach trips that connect Indigenous youth with faculty, researchers, and students who share stories and demonstrations of Volt-Age projects that are shaping a sustainable future.
  • Working with the Office of Community Engagement, build and maintain trusted relationships with Indigenous communities.
  • In collaboration with the Institute for Cooperative Education and the Experiential Learning Office, serve as a liaison between Indigenous community stakeholders, Volt-Age researchers and university departments to ensure the creation of experiential learning opportunities that connect youth to real-world research and industry settings.
  • Working with the Otsenhákta Student Centre, facilitate mentorship connections between Indigenous youth and student or faculty mentors.
  • Develop communications materials promoting research pathways to Indigenous youth.
  • Manage logistics and budgeting for outreach activities.
  • Promotes the outreach programs (via website, social media, community events and media interviews) with the help of University Communications Services.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations, and students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous values, ethics, protocols, and knowledge systems as well as the barriers and challenges faced by Indigenous students.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of youth outreach initiatives.
  • Ability to work effectively at all levels of the organization, including working with faculty members, staff, and youth.
