Duties & Responsibilities
Position Summary/Overview:
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) partners with the VCU community to promote and facilitate a positive, campus-wide attitude of safety excellence and environmental stewardship to protect university assets and reduce risks. The primary mission of Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Health & Safety is to advance and support a safe and healthy environment at VCU and VCU Health. This work is accomplished through surveys, consultation, teaching, advising, auditing and environmental monitoring. As the University liaison for safety and compliance, we work with outside agencies and organizations to address all applicable standards.
This role will assist OHS team members with ensuring that the university maintains compliance with federal and state requirements that apply to several areas of health and safety. The individual will work under the direction of the Industrial Hygienist (IH) with assistance from the Occupational Health Nurse.
Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Fit test and train both university and hospital employees on the proper use of respirators.
- Manage all applicable databases for Fit Testing and other IH duties.
- Maintain respirator and IH equipment inventory.
- Manage the scheduling of fit testing events and appointments.
- Train staff on how to perform fit testing.
- Track and present data on fit test volumes for the health system and university.
- Conduct monitoring and assessment projects under the Industrial Hygienist’s direction.
- Evaluate workplace hazards including: Noise, Particulates - mold/dust, Gases/Vapors.
- Order and distribute sampling media.
- Assist with managing data and confirming accuracy.
- Organize, track and assist with calibration of industrial hygiene equipment.
- Generate and update standard operating procedures and OHS documents.
- Interpret results and write formal monitoring reports.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks independently with minimal supervision.
- Highly organized and capable of consistently applying technical procedures to ensure accurate and reliable outcomes.
- Skilled in operating sensitive electronic equipment used in industrial hygiene monitoring.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience in industrial hygiene or occupational health, ideally in a university, hospital, or research lab setting.
- Experience conducting: Air and noise monitoring, Chemical exposure assessments, Respirator fit testing, Ventilation evaluations
- Familiarity with IH equipment (e.g., sound level meters, air sampling pumps, gas detectors).
- Experience with data analysis, report writing, and interpreting exposure results.
