Institutional Research Analyst (Administrative Analyst/Specialist I)

Position Summary

Are you passionate about using data to drive decision-making and support student success? Join San Diego State University's Analytic Studies & Institutional Research (ASIR) team as an Institutional Research Analyst. In this role, you'll contribute to critical reporting and analysis that supports faculty, students, and university leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Analyze student and faculty data from multiple sources to generate actionable insights and deliver timely reports.
  • Dashboard Development: Design and maintain interactive dashboards that visualize key institutional metrics and trends.
  • Chancellor's Office Submissions: Prepare, review, and submit data files for faculty workload and enrollment reporting (ERS) in alignment with state requirements.
  • Data Integration & Validation: Manage and validate data from PeopleSoft HCM, Campus Solutions, ASIR SQL Server, and other sources to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Collaboration & Support: Partner with the Student Success Analytics group and respond to internal and external data requests to support institutional priorities.
  • Process Documentation: Document data processes, workflows, and business logic to promote transparency and efficiency.

Position Information

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2026. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Provost and Senior Vice President oversees Academic Affairs, which consists of seven colleges and SDSU-Imperial Valley as well as the Library, Graduate Studies, Global Campus and the offices of Faculty Advancement and Student Success, Curriculum and Assessment, International Affairs, and Enrollment Services. The Provost oversees academic goals, educational policy, curriculum planning and development, program planning and quality control, instructional and faculty development, student educational services, external funding support, resource allocations, personnel actions pertaining to faculty and academic staff, collective bargaining, facilities management, the University Senate and all matters that affect the academic environment. The Provost and Senior Vice President serves as spokesperson to the community on matters of academic concern and as President in the absence of the President, and acts as the President's designee on campus, local, regional, state, and California State University System committees. Search committees for new deans of colleges and deans' administrative review panels are coordinated by the Provost's Office.

The mission of San Diego State University's Analytic Studies & Institutional Research (ASIR) is to broadly support Academic Affairs including academic colleges, Enrollment Services, Faculty Advancement & Student Success, Academic Financial Operations, and other divisions with information to inform decision-making. To do so, ASIR leverages available technical resources and staff expertise to ensure data integrity, develop data tools, build partnerships, promote data literacy, conduct in-depth analyses, and activate predictive modeling for operational and strategic needs that support campus decision-making. ASIR's fundamental charge is to collect, review, and validate student and faculty data for the Enrollment Reporting System (ERS), Academic Planning Data Base (APDB) and other mandated federal, state and system requirements.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

Key Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (advanced functions preferred) and familiarity with business intelligence tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
  • Experience working with data, including reconciliation, analysis, and compliance reporting.
  • Comfortable using a variety of software tools, including the Microsoft Office Suite, and able to learn new technologies as needed.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to manage projects and collaborate with diverse stakeholders to understand and meet data needs.
  • Experience working with student information systems and/or institutional research in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of SQL and experience developing data reports or dashboards is preferred.
  • Familiarity with higher education policies and reporting requirements is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

San Diego State University offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your well-being and professional growth.

Compensation: Salary is based on your experience, education, and qualifications, within the department's budget and equity guidelines. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,879 - $7,488/month; hiring salary not expected to exceed $3,938/month.
