Instructional Designer
Job Details
The Instructional Designer in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) will work with faculty and programs to enhance the quality of online courses by developing and implementing a quality assurance program consistent with Quality Matters. Job duties include:
- Creates program-level course shells and curates online resources.
- Provides professional development opportunities for faculty on best practices in online teaching.
- Develops and implements a quality assurance program for online education rooted in Quality Matters (QM). Works with CETL Director, the Coordinator for Online Education & e-Learning, and Information Technology Training Support staff to prepare faculty to develop/modify courses for QM review, providing feedback and recommendations to faculty.
- Works with the Digital Accessibility Working Group to support institutional efforts to ensure all online courses are inclusive and accessible to all students in accordance with WCAG standards and pertinent federal regulations. Provide training and support to faculty on accessibility best practices.
- Works closely with CETL Director and CETL Online Education & e-Learning Coordinator to consult with and support faculty and academic leadership to understand their needs and goals for online education.
- Provides guidance and support in the development and implementation of online academic programs to set them on a trajectory for QM certification. Facilitates workshops and training sessions for faculty on best practices in online education.
Preferred qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree Required. Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement. Advanced degree (EdD or similar) strongly preferred.
- Experience: 5 years of directly relevant work experience required. At least 3 years of higher education experience in faculty development or instructional design with increasing levels of complexity and/or responsibility strongly preferred including experience assessing online course curriculum design using the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) or Quality Matters design and evaluation processes

The successful candidate will demonstrate many of the following preferred qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., Curriculum and Instruction, Instructional Design)
- Successful design of online courses in a higher education context
- Experience teaching credit-bearing higher education courses
- Extensive knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies and design approaches, and experience applying this knowledge in classroom teaching and/or design work
- Familiarity or experience with project management and/or assessment
- Ability to write and edit html code
- Familiarity with intentional use of generative AI for course design
- Familiarity with accessible course design informed by Quality Matters components and digital accessibility consistent with WCAG standards.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills
- Readiness to take initiative, be self-directed, and apply creativity in accomplishing objectives Eagerness to grow, learn, and develop new skills
- Eagerness to contribute to highly collaborative and team-based work
- Preferred Certifications: Quality Matters Certified Higher Ed Peer Reviewer, Quality Matters Teaching Online Certificate, Applying the QM Rubric Course, OLC Online Teaching Certificate, and/or similar
