Instructional Designer

The Instructional Designer supports the research community by developing high-quality, engaging training materials in multiple formats. This role involves collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs), applying instructional design best practices, and leveraging technology to create and maintain educational content that addresses identified learning needs. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement and team success.

  • Collaborate with SMEs to determine audience learning needs and develop effective instructional materials for instructor-led, blended, and asynchronous formats.
  • Apply current instructional design principles and educational technologies to create engaging courses and virtual content.
  • Evaluate, revise, and enhance instructional materials based on feedback and assessments to improve learning outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain organized documentation and course resources using platforms such as MyLINC, Canvas, Claro, Google Drive, etc.
  • Create and administer course evaluations, surveys, and registration/application processes.
  • Manage administrative and logistical tasks for synchronous sessions including courses and webinars.
  • Participate in course development and design meetings; take notes, track action items, and synthesize information.
  • Edit and produce video and digital content for training purposes.
  • Handle sensitive information with discretion; make independent, informed decisions as needed.
  • Manage multiple projects and shift priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Participate and support special projects' goals and tasks while contributing to continuous process improvements.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, or a related field.
  • Master's degree in instructional design, curriculum development (preferred).

Professional Experience:

  • Proficiency in developing instructor-led, eLearning training and blended training materials - including videos.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Experience in instructional design, content development, curriculum development.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and has the ability to remain patient and adaptable to a range of individuals, personalities and needs.
  • Ability to create valid assessments that align with learning objectives.
  • Experience with formative and summative evaluation of instructional interventions and curricular initiatives.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Proficiency with tools for creating interactive and multimedia content (Articulate, Camptasia, Captivate, H5P, or similar).
  • Demonstrated expertise in creating and editing video and audio content, and in designing graphics using industry-standard software.
  • Skilled in using Microsoft Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Google Suite and Zoom video conferencing platform.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards for material design / creation.

Instructional Design Knowledge:

  • Deep understanding of instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, SAM, Backward Design).
  • Knowledge of learning theories (constructivism, adult learning theory, active learning).
  • Capable of conducting needs assessments and learning outcomes analyses.
  • Exceptional ability in gathering information / knowledge from SMEs, and transforming it into clear, concise and effective training materials--including videos, demonstrations, quizzes, instructor-led session, eLearning modules and blended learning formats.

Collaboration & Communication Skills:

  • Ability to quickly understand and communicate complex concepts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to collaborate with subject-matter experts (SMEs), staff, and program stakeholders.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, including the ability to coach and support SMEs, instructors in adopting instructional technologies, methods and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative by proactively identifying learning needs, proposing innovative instructional solutions, and independently driving projects from conception to completion.

Project Management:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams, possibly with agile development methods.

Assessment & Evaluation:

  • Ability to create course assessments that align with learning objectives.
  • Experience with formative and summative evaluation of instructional sessions and curricular initiatives.

Innovative and Willingness to Learn:

  • Willingness to explore and implement new instructional technologies and innovations.
  • Uses research and data to inform content accuracy and design decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing training materials for research administration in academic settings.
  • Proficiency with Canvas LMS, Claro eLearning authoring tool, and video editing software.
  • Understanding of university policies and procedures in research for academic administration.
  • Master's degree in instructional design, curriculum development.
