Basic Function

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assists instructors in the planning, organization, preparation, and presentation of classroom and laboratory. Oversees and facilitates the day-to-day laboratory operations, and maintains instructional equipment and technology.

Representative Duties

  1. Assists instructors and staff in planning, organizing, preparing, and presentation of classroom and laboratory materials for area of assignment (such as; ceramics, music technology, arts, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy and geography, etc.). E
  2. Sets up and takes down equipment and materials for various labs. E
  3. Prepares and maintains discipline-specific materials in classrooms and instructional laboratories. E
  4. Takes and maintains inventory of equipment and supplies; updates and maintains stockroom inventory records for a variety of lab materials and supplies. E
  5. Maintains and makes minor repairs to discipline-specific classroom and laboratory equipment. E
  6. Prepares solutions and assembles materials needed for laboratory experiments. E
  7. With guidance and coordination from Information Technology, maintains technology that includes installing/upgrading/decommissioning of computers, softwares and peripherals relevant to the disciplines. E
  8. Collaborates with instructors to; plan, organize, prepare, and conduct lab experiments; assists with curriculum, lab experiments, and program plans, as needed. E
  9. Maintains records of requisitions and purchases on behalf of the assigned programs/departments. E
  10. Coordinates with Facilities or other District or college departments to arrange for and repair broken or malfunctioning equipment or facilities. E
  11. Contacts and meets with vendors to obtain material and/or service quotes. E
  12. Coordinates with Administrative Assistant to the Division Office regarding requisitions, purchase orders (POs), invoices, and accounts payable; coordinates orders and deliveries with warehouse personnel. E
  13. Ensures lab stockroom is up to Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA) regulations where applicable. E
  14. Supervises, trains, and provides work direction to student assistants, student workers, and/or short-term, temporary staff, as assigned. E
  15. Works with Financial Aid Department to identify, interview, and hire student workers from the Federal Work Study and/or District Work Study Programs; trains, schedules, supervises, and provides work direction and daily assignments to student workers; reviews submitted timesheets against hours worked; verifies budget, and submits to appropriate personnel for approval. E
  16. Assists faculty, staff, and students with a variety of requests related to the area of assignment, as directed by the supervisor. E
  17. Proctor labs, lab exams, and examinations, as needed. E
  18. Assists with events related to assigned programs. E
  19. Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • District and college policies and procedures as they relate to the area of assignment.
  • Fundamentals, terminology, techniques, equipment and materials used in the assigned disiciplines/areas.
  • Operation of a variety of lab and instructional equipment.
  • Technical aspects of the assigned disiciplines/areas.
  • Laboratory operation at the community college level.
  • OSHA lab safety rules and regulations as applicable.
  • Biohazardous waste and chemical waste disposal protocols where applicable.
  • First aid, fire, and lab safety measures.
  • Computer database systems used in accounting activities.
  • Principles and practices of training and providing work direction.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic record-keeping, filing, and filing system techniques.

ABILITY TO:

  • Independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position.
  • Assist instructors in planning, organization, preparing, and presenting classroom and laboratory materials.
  • Operate, demonstrate, and maintain specialized instruments and equipment used in the assigned labs.
  • Ensure the care and security of assigned equipment, specialized materials, and supplies.
  • Demonstrate competence in the assigned areas.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare and process purchase orders, requisitions, and invoices.
  • Receive and control equipment and supplies.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Update and maintain various records.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize workload to meet established timelines.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Train and provide work direction to student workers, temporary, and short-term staff.
  • Type at an acceptable rate of speed.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Education and Experience

Associate Degree with major coursework in assigned disciplines/areas or related field; AND Three to four (3-4) years of work experience in the field or discipline related to the assignment;

Or,

Bachelors Degree in assigned disciplines/areas or related field; AND One to two (1-2) years of work experience in the field or discipline related to the assignment;

Or,

Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Working Conditions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus. Employees are frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. Employees work in a classroom or Instructional laboratory environment; they may be subject to exposure to potentially hazardous materials and fumes from chemicals related to caustic and corrosive chemicals, depending upon the specific laboratory environment. Employees work under typical office conditions, with constant interruptions, and the noise level may vary depending on activities of the office.
