Instructor, Biology
Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an Instructor in the Biological Sciences Department. The Instructor will be responsible for preparing and delivering courses, grading assignments, and managing student records. This position requires close collaboration with the Discipline Chair and other faculty members, including those from different disciplines, to enhance the department and support its students.
- Teach all courses, credit and non-credit, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction, including seated, online, and hybrid as needed at any of Durham Tech's instructional sites, especially at the main campus and the Orange County Campus (OCC).
- Knowledge of equitable teaching practices, particularly in the field of biology.
- Be fully prepared with a syllabus and instructional plans for each class session in accordance with the stated objectives of the course.
- Enforce academic policy and procedures at all times, and comply with institutional rules and regulations.
- Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations, as well as to meet the needs of the department, division, and college.
- Serve as educational advisor to students and participate in semester advising and registration activities for both assigned advisees and, as needed, individual students.
- Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings, committees, and other special appointments.
- Assist in the revision and development of course outlines, syllabi, curriculum plans, and other instructional documentation, and in the identification, development, preview, and acquisition of educational resources and supplies required to meet program objectives and improve instruction.
- Maintain complete course and student records, reports, and forms.
- Attend training and other professional development opportunities on- or off-campus and stay current with developments in the field of instruction.
- Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the chair, department dean, chief instructional officer, or president, in meeting the needs of the department, division, and college.
- Assume responsibility for laboratory/classroom preparation, including maintenance and cleanup, and recommend, as necessary, appropriate laboratory supplies and equipment at all Durham Tech instructional sites.
- A master's degree or a doctoral degree in Biology, or a related subject, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in biological sciences
Work Experience:
- Two years of successful experience teaching science at a university or community college is preferred.
- Experience in teaching nonmajors biology, environmental biology, organismal biology, evolution, biodiversity, and/or ecology is preferred.
