Instructor in Applied Theatre

The Drama & Screen Studies Program at Mount Allison University invites applications for a full-time (ten-month per academic year) Instructor position in Applied Theatre, beginning July 1, 2026, subject to budgetary approval. We seek a dynamic theatre practitioner and educator with strong experience in teaching and directing at the post-secondary level within a liberal arts context; and program and curricular development within a collaborative environment.

This position plays a central role in the delivery of the Drama curriculum and the artistic life of the program, with responsibilities spanning teaching, production, student mentorship, and program and public-facing initiatives.

Teaching Responsibilities
The successful candidate will normally teach 5-6 courses across the Drama curriculum, including but not limited to:

  • Introduction to Drama Studies
  • Principals of Directing
  • Introduction to Acting
  • Advanced Acting
  • Playwriting and Dramaturgy
  • A fourth-year seminar in Drama and/or Studio

In addition, the Instructor will be expected to:

  • Supervise independent studies at the upper-year level, including both research-based and applied/creative projects
  • Mentor students working across performance, directing, writing, and dramaturgical practice

Teaching responsibilities will include both lecture-based and studio-based courses, and candidates should demonstrate the ability to work with students at varying levels of experience.

Production and Program Responsibilities
In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Direct a mainstage production within the department’s production season (frequency to be determined by program needs)
  • Contribute to the artistic and pedagogical vision of the Drama program
  • Support applied learning and experiential education opportunities for students

The role also includes:

  • Managing and coordinating in-house marketing initiatives for productions and program events
  • Supervising the program’s Marketing Student Technician
  • Working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to promote Drama productions and activities within the university and broader community

Qualifications
Required:

  • An MFA or equivalent professional experience in theatre or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching theory and studio/applied courses in drama/theatre at the postsecondary level
  • Significant practical experience in one or more of the following: directing, acting, playwriting, dramaturgy
  • A demonstrated record of excellence in mentoring and supervising students in creative and theoretical work
  • Strong organizational, collaborative, and leadership skills

Preferred:

  • 10+ years’ experience directing full-length theatrical productions in an academic or professional context
  • Experience with arts marketing, audience development, or promotional strategy

Experience supervising student technicians and independent study students (especially in studio practice)
