Interlochen Arts Academy seeks a full-time English Instructor (literature and composition) to teach students in grades 9-12. The instructor will teach 5 sections of class. We are especially seeking candidates with a background in African American Studies. Classes the instructor could teach include Black Diaspora Literature & Culture, The Harlem Renaissance, and African American Literature, though the incoming instructor will have the opportunity to propose their own courses. The instructor will also teach a grade 9, 10, or 11 general English course. As a faculty member at Interlochen, obligations reach beyond the classrooms and studios to assist with the growth of the institution and full operations that are part of boarding school life. While not directly involved in student supervision in the residence halls (dorms), each faculty and education staff member is expected to serve as an advisor to a small group of students and to contribute to the community through assistance with campus events, advisory groups, and other activities. This is a full-time, permanent teaching position starting in late August 2026.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach 5 sections of English classes
  • Serve as advisor to a small group of students who meet weekly
  • Hold daily office hours (which are built into the schedule)
  • Maintain a course page online through Canvas, take attendance daily in each class, keep electronic gradebook up to date, and prepare timely and thorough grade reports
  • Attend department, division, and full faculty and employee meetings
  • Participate in all-school events at the beginning and end of the school year, as well as periodically throughout each semester
  • Seek the best use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness
  • Comply with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances
  • Respect the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community
  • Prioritize duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • BA in English or related field required; MA preferred
  • Experience teaching high school students preferred
  • Familiarity with the following technology / software / programs preferred: Google suite and Canvas (or another Learning Management System)
  • Commitment to creating an educational environment where all students can thrive
  • Works effectively with students from a variety of educational backgrounds and at a variety of educational readiness levels, implementing differentiated instructional strategies to support all students
  • Openness to incorporating the arts as a mode of instruction and/or assessment
  • Strong interest in collaborating with colleagues, and openness to classroom observations by peers, supervisors, and visiting students/parents
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Follows and executes specific verbal and written instructions
  • Promotes and maintains positive interaction with all internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrates respect for cultural, ethnic, spiritual, and linguistic diversity and values including differences in personal goals, lifestyle choices and varying family backgrounds and histories
