Position Announcement

The Department of History, Humanities, and Modern Languages at Utah Tech University in St. George, Utah, invites applications for a full-time Instructor of the Practice (professional-track) position in History, Anthropology, and Cultural Studies, with an anticipated start date of July 2026. The History and Political Science Program, housed within the Department of History, Humanities, and Modern Languages, currently supports programs in History, Social Sciences Education, and Political Science. The successful applicant's specialty is open, but candidates with the ability to contribute to courses in Human Geography, Native American Studies, Early American History, or other regions or themes that complement our existing areas of strength (East Asian, European, and American History after 1850), are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 30 credits per academic year.
  • Contribute to the History program's general education offerings in American History (HIST 1700), which satisfies the state of Utah's American Institutions general education requirement for all university graduates.
  • Teach a lower division course in Anthropology on rotation, primarily targeted at students training for careers in secondary education.
  • Teach at least one additional course in a specialty topic area of the instructor's choosing per year.
  • The successful applicant may be asked to contribute to the supervision or training of secondary education teachers.

Qualifications

  • At minimum, the successful applicant will have an M.A. in History, Anthropology, or a closely related field, or an M.Ed. in Secondary Education with a background or emphasis in Social Studies.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence; a background in, or experience with secondary education is highly desired.
  • An eagerness to engage with colleagues, staff, and administrators to develop ways to improve the educational experience of students.
  • The willingness to build an interdisciplinary program that leverages off multiple disciplines.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time (9-month) professional-track faculty position. Faculty service begins August 2026, with pay and benefits starting July 1, 2026. Annual salary of $57,000, with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching.
