Position Announcement

The Department of History, Humanities, and Modern Languages at Utah Tech University (UT) in St. George, Utah, is seeking an enthusiastic and well-qualified individual for an Instructor of the Practice (professional track) position in American Sign Language. At UT, Instructors of the Practice are considered Master Teachers. Instructors of the Practice are hired as expert instructors with no scholarship expectations and nominal service expectations. Professional track faculty are not on the tenure track, but these positions are continuing positions with rank advancement opportunities. Instructors of the Practice teach a 30-credit load, which typically is a 5-5 load. Any summer teaching or overload teaching during the fall or spring semesters is additional work for additional compensation.

The successful candidate will contribute significantly to a rapidly growing ASL program to train future interpreters towards an ASL interpreter certification and/or degree. This position starts July 1, 2026. Classes begin in mid-August 2026. Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate must engage in all aspects of teaching, including:
    • Teach 30 credits of classroom instruction per academic year. Teach ASL courses at all levels (1000-4000) that focus on interpreting and related courses, leading to certification and/or degree.
    • Hold office hours, submit grades per University deadlines, and conduct required course evaluations.
    • Collaborate with Program Coordinator in developing, planning, and hosting events that connect the University to the greater Southern Utah Deaf Community.
    • Review and assist with developing ASL curriculum sufficient to prepare students for state and national certification testing.
    • Review and assist with developing ASL curriculum to align with interpreter education standards for accreditation.
    • Assess curriculum and delivery methods to develop courses that can be offered through on-line systems.
    • Assist students in developing interpreting skills and analyzing ASL development and production.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator and/or Department Chair.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of Master's Degree in Interpreting Pedagogy or related field is required; applicants with considerable professional experience in ASL interpreting who are currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in an Interpreting Related field and a clear completion date no later than December of 2027 will also be considered.
  • Significant teaching experience at the university level is strongly preferred, as is the ability to work as a collaborative partner in program building, and a commitment to student services.
  • Interpreter Certification (NIC, NAD, RID, CDI, UTAH PROFESSIONAL, or equitable qualification) required; extensive interpreting experience expected.
  • Membership in various interpreter, deaf, and interpreter training organizations.
  • Diverse network of local, state and national practitioners and stakeholders.
  • Extensive experience, focus, interest, and expertise in college level teaching (finalists will be required to demonstrate competence in a teaching module).
  • Evidence of continued engagement in the practice of Interpreting. Ability and willingness to adapt courses to current technology including incorporation of AI and on-line approaches.
  • Familiarity and experience with GoReact and other assistive teaching tools that support language acquisition and interpreting skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with students, staff, and colleagues – manually, orally and in writing.
  • An eagerness to engage with faculty, staff, administrators, and constituents or advisory boards to develop ways to improve the educational experience of students interested in pursuing careers related to American Sign Language.
  • Experience in course, curriculum, and program development preferred including adapting curriculum to include theories, publications, and resources specific to the professionalization of the interpreting field.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time (9-month) professional-track faculty position. Faculty service begins August 2026, with pay and benefits starting July 1, 2026. Annual salary of $57,000-$60,000 depending on qualifications and experience, with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching.
