Essential Job Duties:
This position plays a vital role in delivering high-quality care to patients in the Intermediate Care (IMC) department-the 24/7 progressive care unit of our specialty hospital. The IMC provides exposure to a wide variety of small animal and exotic cases, offering a dynamic and enriching environment for veterinary professionals.
We are seeking a candidate with advanced veterinary knowledge and a strong commitment to working in a fast-paced, teaching-focused setting that embraces openness and collaboration.
Success in this role requires strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability in a fast-paced teaching environment. Additionally, this position requires the ability to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis with or without accommodation. The IMC Technician plays a key role in mentoring veterinary students and fostering a culture of learning, professionalism, and excellence in patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Patient Care
- Facilitate patient admissions through collaboration with students and clinicians, discussing presenting issues, diagnostics, treatment plans, and care strategies.
- Administer medical treatments and monitor patient health, including:
- TPR, bladder expression, blood pressure monitoring
- Venipuncture, peripheral and central catheter placement
- Sedative and therapeutic injections, urinary catheter care, blood transfusions
- Perform moderate-risk drug calculations (CRI, IV fluids, pain management therapies).
- Monitor post-sedation and post-anesthetic patients for complications.
- Provide post-operative care and pain management for a range of surgical patients (neurological, orthopedic, internal medicine, soft tissue).
- Manage seizure and respiratory cases with direct observation and intervention.
- Care for patients with infectious diseases using appropriate isolation protocols.
- Operate specialized equipment such as IV fluid pumps, pulse oximeters, BP monitors, syringe pumps, and wound vacuums.
Coordination & Teaching
- Document and communicate patient care data using hospital information systems.
- Support the orientation and training of new staff, students, interns, and residents.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in compliance with hospital standards, OSHA, EHS, and radiation safety protocols.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education:
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Required Qualifications:
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Demonstrated proficiency in patient monitoring, anesthesia recovery, and advanced veterinary nursing techniques.
- Strong communication, mentoring, and teamwork skills in a collaborative, educational environment.
- Proven ability to prioritize tasks, exercise sound judgment, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced clinical setting.
- Familiarity with veterinary information systems and electronic medical recordkeeping.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Demonstrated proficiency in patient monitoring, anesthesia recovery, and advanced veterinary nursing techniques.
- Strong communication, mentoring, and teamwork skills in a collaborative, educational environment.

Required license or certification:
- Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
- Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program
