The Human Biology Division cultivates interdisciplinary research to advance understanding of human biology and the complex problems of neoplasia and other human diseases. The division is structured to foster laboratory-based and computational research at the interface of basic, clinical and population sciences.

The Holland Lab internship provides research training in neuro-oncology, with a focus on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving glioblastoma. The intern will contribute to projects using genetically engineered mouse models through the RCAS/tv-a system to study tumor progression and therapeutic response. The intern will gain experience in laboratory animal handling and treatment, histological tissue processing, quantitative image analysis, and cell culture techniques. The internship will also provide experience in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication.

This is a part time, in-person internship.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a comprehensive understanding of glioblastoma biology, with emphasis on keyoncogenic drivers and the use of the RCAS/tv-a system to model disease progression and evaluate therapeutic strategies.
  • Acquire foundational skills in cell culture, including sterile technique, cell maintenance, experimental manipulation of cultured cells, and preparing cells for injection in mice.
  • Develop proficiency in laboratory animal management, including the handling, treatment, and monitoring of mice for experimental studies.
  • Generate and analyze histological data by preparing tissue samples, producing immunohistochemical images, and quantitatively assessing treatment using QuPath.
  • Strengthen scientific communication skills by effectively conveying experimental progress and results to people at different levels of experience.
  • Develop skills in experimental design, data organization, and reproducible research practices, including proper controls, documentation, and data management.
  • Gain experience working collaboratively in a research environment, incorporating feedback from peers, postdocs, and PI's

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience analyzing MRI data.
  • Conceptual understanding of cellular and molecular neuroscience.
  • Good written and verbal communication.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $21.30 to $30.13 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
