Essential Job Duties:
This position supports the Internal Medicine service within the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center, providing advanced care and coordination for patients requiring specialized diagnosis and treatment. The technician plays an integral role in clinical procedures, patient monitoring, and communication with clients, clinicians, students, and referring veterinarians to ensure exceptional patient outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting patient intake, admitting, scheduling, and client communications.
- Performing and assisting with diagnostic procedures such as anesthesia monitoring, endoscopy support, and sample collection.
- Administering treatments including IV catheter placement, venipuncture, CRI calculations, and post-anesthesia care.
- Monitoring patients with complex conditions including endocrine, infectious, hematologic, and gastrointestinal diseases.
- Operating specialized medical equipment (IV fluid pumps, BP monitors, syringe pumps, etc.) and maintaining a sterile, organized clinical environment.
- Collaborating with diagnostic teams for CT, MRI, ultrasound, and radiography procedures.
- Teaching and mentoring veterinary students, interns, and residents in patient care and hospital protocols.
This position requires adaptability, strong teamwork, the ability to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis with or without accommodation, and clear communication in a fast-paced, teaching-hospital setting. The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism under pressure, attention to detail, and a commitment to both patient care and collaborative learning.

Minimum Experience/Education:
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Required Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a canine / feline veterinary setting.
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
- Ability to provide high quality customer service.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
- Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
- Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
- Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Demonstrated ability to perform and support diagnostic and treatment procedures safely and accurately.
- Proficiency with hospital information systems for patient documentation and communication.
- Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to mentor and collaborate across a varied clinical team.
- Ability to independently manage patient care, exercise sound judgment, and adapt to changing clinical priorities.
Required license or certification:
- Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
- Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program
