Position Overview
The University of Utah
Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine seeks an accomplished
academic interventional cardiologist to serve as Chief of the
Section of Interventional Cardiology within the Division of
Cardiovascular Medicine, in the Department of Internal Medicine.
This is an exceptional opportunity for an innovative and
collaborative physician leader to guide one of the nation's premier
academic interventional cardiology programs while advancing
excellence in patient care, research, education, and clinical
innovation across the University of Utah Health system.
The Section Chief will provide strategic, clinical, academic, and
operational leadership for a nationally recognized program that
serves patients throughout Utah and the Intermountain West. As a
key member of the Division's executive leadership team, the Section
Chief will work closely with departmental, hospital, and health
system leaders to develop and implement a vision for continued
growth of coronary, structural heart, peripheral vascular, and
advanced cardiovascular intervention programs while promoting
outstanding clinical outcomes, scholarly achievement, and
multidisciplinary collaboration.
The successful candidate will possess an established record of
academic accomplishment, visionary leadership, and clinical
excellence, with demonstrated success in developing faculty,
fostering multidisciplinary programs, advancing research, and
building high-performing clinical teams.
The Section of Interventional Cardiology
The
Section of Interventional Cardiology is a nationally recognized
academic program providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art care
across the full spectrum of cardiovascular intervention. Faculty
perform advanced coronary intervention, structural heart
interventions, peripheral vascular intervention, complex and
high-risk PCI, chronic total occlusion intervention, mechanical
circulatory support, and catheter-based therapies for acute
cardiovascular disease.
The Section is fully integrated within the University of Utah
Health Cardiovascular Service Line and partners closely with
Cardiac Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Imaging, Heart Failure,
Electrophysiology, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, and referring
physicians throughout the Intermountain West. The program serves as
a major regional referral center for complex cardiovascular disease
and supports a broad portfolio of investigator-initiated and
industry-sponsored clinical research, translational science, and
innovation.
The Section also plays a central role in the education of
cardiovascular disease fellows, interventional cardiology fellows,
residents, medical students, and physician-scientists. Faculty are
committed to excellence in procedural training, mentorship,
simulation-based education, and the development of future leaders
in academic cardiovascular medicine.
Leadership Responsibilities
The Section Chief
will provide visionary leadership for all aspects of the Section's
clinical, academic, operational, and research missions.
Responsibilities include:
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute a strategic vision that advances the
Section's national reputation and supports the missions of the
Division, Department, and University.
Identify opportunities for programmatic growth, innovation, and
regional expansion.
Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability,
professionalism, and continuous improvement.
Serve as an engaged leader within the Cardiovascular Service
Line and University Health system.
Clinical Excellence
- Promote exceptional quality, safety, patient-centered care, and
clinical outcomes.
- Lead multidisciplinary Heart Team programs across coronary,
structural heart, and complex cardiovascular intervention.
- Advance regional STEMI and cardiovascular emergency systems of
care.
- Improve patient access, operational efficiency, and value-based
care.
Faculty Development
- Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain outstanding faculty.
- Support academic advancement and leadership development.
- Foster an inclusive culture that values collaboration,
innovation, professionalism, and mutual respect.
- Promote physician engagement and wellness.
Research and Innovation
- Expand investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical
research.
- Strengthen collaborations in translational science,
engineering, data science, and artificial intelligence.
- Increase participation in multicenter clinical trials.
- Promote innovation in cardiovascular devices, procedural
techniques, and outcomes research.
Education
- Support excellence in fellowship education and procedural
training.
- Promote educational scholarship and curriculum
development.
- Mentor trainees at all levels and cultivate the next generation
of academic interventional cardiologists.
Health System Leadership
- Partner with health system leadership to advance strategic
growth across the Intermountain region.
- Promote responsible stewardship of clinical, financial, and
human resources.
- Utilize quality metrics and operational data to improve
performance and patient outcomes.
- Build collaborative relationships with referring physicians and
regional hospitals.
Qualifications
Candidates must be board
certified in Cardiovascular Disease and/or Interventional
Cardiology and be eligible for medical licensure in the State of
Utah.
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- A distinguished record of clinical excellence in interventional
cardiology.
- Academic accomplishments consistent with appointment at the
rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
- Progressive leadership experience within an academic
cardiovascular program.
- A record of faculty mentorship and successful program
development.
- National or international recognition through scholarship,
research, innovation, or leadership.
- Outstanding communication, collaboration, and organizational
skills.
- A commitment to advancing excellence in clinical care,
education, research, and health system performance.
