Interviewer (Health, Behavior and Society)

The Department of Health, Behavior, and Society is dedicated to research, education, and practice addressing public health issues rooted in human behavior and social conditions, including smoking, substance use, diabetes, HIV, and related health challenges. The Department is seeking an Interviewer to support its research initiatives.

The Interviewer provides entry-level administrative support for a research project. Will assist with tasks that may include community outreach, data collection, sample collection, laboratory work, and/or field work. Collects and/or organizes data through implementation of research procedures and understanding of research goals. This position is also responsible for data collection, obtaining informed consent, and data entry of interview data.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with collection and organization of data per study requirements, e.g. participant interviews, administer questionnaires; conduct background research, etc.
  • Assist with setting up tools and procedures for data collection and study processes.
  • Enter data into the database.
  • Run routine queries of the data.
  • Perform basic literature searches.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In addition to the duties above

  • Recruitment and enrollment of research participants, including participant screening, obtaining informed consent, HIV counseling and testing, and providing referrals to care.
  • Interviewers may also serve as Field Supervisors with responsibility for overseeing data collection in the field, including managing incentive payments to participants and recording payments in payment vouchers.
  • Interviewers with a valid driver’s license may also drive project vans to assigned venues for data collection.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of study participants' identity and information, including responses to survey questions and HIV test results.
  • Basic technology and computer skills.

On-Call / Non-Standard Work Hour Requirement

  • Data collection occurs both in the study office and onsite using mobile project vans.
  • Evening hours are required, typically 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., with variability depending on venue closing times (e.g., bars and other data collection sites).
  • In-office hours are generally 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Data collection activities occur Monday through Saturday.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Six months of work experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively in an unstructured environment, as well as collaboratively within a team
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to interact professionally with a diverse range of individuals
  • Knowledge of communities at increased risk for HIV
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred
  • Flexibility with work hours
