Job Description
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for IT Technician 3, University Police Department (UPD), Southern Command. This position serves as a helpdesk support role providing comprehensive IT assistance to UPD personnel. The successful candidate will work with minimal supervision, handling equipment deployment, system implementation, and serving as the initial point of contact for IT service requests. This role includes serving as the point person for ticket system implementation and has opportunities to lead special projects related to law enforcement IT.
Role of the Position
Helpdesk Support Operations (40% of time)
- Install software, resolve general technology needs, assist with use, error resolution, network connections, password reset, and service request coordination, referral, and escalation
- Serve as the initial point of contact for general IT service requests from UPD personnel
- Document all requests and related communication in the appropriate service management tool
- Make determinations on best-approach methods to solve general technology issues
- Work collaboratively with other IT professionals and university departments
Equipment Preparation and Deployment (30% of time)
- Prepare equipment for implementation, image computers, install operating systems and applications, adjust configurations, and setup accounts
- Deploy technology equipment, move, deliver, and setup hardware to user requirements
- Update inventory to reflect location and possession of property
- Prepare equipment for surplus when needed
Customer Service and Support (20% of time)
- Provide excellent customer service, listening and understanding user needs
- Solve problems, demonstrate eagerness to assist others, and exhibit professional disposition
- Understand the basic operations of the University, UPD and the higher education environment
- Work with minimal daily supervision at remote sites for extended periods
System Testing and Documentation (10% of time)
- Test implementation of new systems and document new and/or changes to services, tools, or applications
- Conduct and update inventory of department technology
- Create and maintain documentation of IT procedures and configurations
- Serve as point person for ticket system implementation, leading the deployment and optimization of service management tools
- Lead special projects related to law enforcement IT, including specialized software implementations and technology upgrades specific to police operations
Working Environment
This position operates within the unique environment of a university police department, requiring: Ability to work with minimal daily supervision and occasionally work unsupervised at other off-campus substations; Understanding of law enforcement operational needs and confidential information handling; Collaboration with multiple university departments and external IT support teams; Physical demands including ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, and work from elevated surfaces when needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent and four years of experience utilizing the fundamentals of typical computer systems, operating systems, applications, and peripherals, two years of which must have included IT work experience in a user support role; OR one year of relevant experience as an IT Technician II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Entry Level Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Detailed knowledge of: Computer hardware, software, peripherals, and current computer technology and trends; help desk applications as used for change/problem management; Working knowledge of commercially available operating systems and applications; principles and practices of computer systems and peripheral devices; user password security principles and practices; General knowledge of database principles; network domains and login procedures; web browser capabilities and differences between intranets and the Internet; Ability to: analyze problems, develop alternatives, and recommend appropriate solutions; assist users with problems and disseminate system information; create and maintain specific records/documentation; troubleshoot and analyze problems to determine appropriate resolution level; use utilities to check for network connectivity.

SALARY
Grade 30 Step 1, salary $52,722.00. In accordance with Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) 284.170, initial appointments to classified positions typically begin at Step 1 of the assigned grade.
