IT Technician (Permanent)

IT Technician (Permanent)

The Faculty of Mathematics is seeking to appoint a full-time permanent IT Technician to provide IT support services to the Faculty. The IT Technician provides a range of professional support services to staff across the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics (DPMMS). The Departments collectively employ just over 100 academic staff, more than 110 research staff, nearly 90 professional services staff, and additionally provides support to our student community.

The IT Technician is a key member of our second-line support team and reports directly to the Computing and IT Manager. In this role, you will contribute to the management of servers, storage, and network infrastructure by following established procedures and working under the guidance of senior technicians.

Acting as a crucial bridge between first- and second-line support, you will take ownership of more in-depth technical investigations that extend beyond the scope of the first-line team. You will also play an important role in improving team efficiency by maintaining and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and automating manual tasks through scripting.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and experience supporting users with a wide range of technical abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with a willingness and ability to develop new technical competencies.

You should have proven experience working with a variety of computer systems, ideally including Windows and macOS for end-user device configuration. Familiarity with Linux and basic scripting will be advantageous, enabling you to contribute effectively to light server and storage administration tasks.

Please refer to the Further Particulars document for the full list of essential and desirable criteria.

We encourage our team to develop relevant skills through training in agreement with the line manager.

This is an office-based position with an option to incorporate up to two hybrid working days in your work pattern after successful training. Hybrid working and your work pattern hours will cover core working hours between 10:00am and 4:00pm and is subject to operational needs. Additionally, this can include a limited period of operation in the first-line helpdesk rota to provide essential coverage.
