SUMMARY:
This position manages the Ivan Hilton stockroom, assists and supports the operation of teaching laboratories throughout the Ivan Hilton Science Building, receives and tracks chemicals, coordinates the collection and disposal of chemical and biological waste according to state and federal laws for the University and maintains chemical instrumentation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Makes work-related decisions independently (self-directed) within the context of the position and assigned duties.
- Performs assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.
- Maintains the chemical inventory (record all substances that enter and exit the building) and keeps records of chemicals as required by the OSHA laboratory standard.
- Maintains current inventory of laboratory equipment, materials, and laboratory items including compressed gases and cryogens (liquid helium and nitrogen).
- Purchases supplies and equipment as requested.
- Supports and assists faculty and teaching staff with the chemical aspects of laboratory courses.
- Sets up and takes down equipment for chemistry courses.
- Prepares solutions and materials for chemistry classes.
- Supports the CHO in all chemical-handling procedures including shipping, receiving, storage, use and waste collection, tracking, and disposal according to state and federal regulations.
- Supports University when CHO is not on campus.
- Trains and assists personnel including students on use of laboratory equipment and departmental instrumentation and maintains training records and instrument logs.
- Tracks and installs EHS software.
- Direct student workers and graduate assistants as needed.
- Perform clerical tasks as needed.
- Maintains regular attendance.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- EDUCATION: BA/BS in physical science field.
- EXPERIENCE: Previous experience working in a chemical lab, stockroom, or similar setting can be highly beneficial. This could include working as a laboratory assistant, lab technician, or stockroom assistant.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of laboratory and clerical procedures.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment.
- Knowledge of computer software.
- Ability to perform math calculations, solution preparations.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff and students.
- Ability to follow technical instructions, procedure manuals, and charts to solve practical problems; and/or compose routine or specialized reports or forms
- Ability to learn new skills and evolve to keep pace with new technologie
