James R. ’58 and Susan Neumann Postdoctoral Fellowship in Jazz History

The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College invites applications for the James R. ’58 and Susan Neumann Postdoctoral Fellowship in Jazz History beginning with the 2026–27 academic year. This is a full-time, non-continuing, 2-year, non-renewable, faculty position in Jazz Studies.

The James R. ’58 and Susan Neumann Postdoctoral Fellowship in Jazz History is a two-year fellowship for scholars who have recently completed their doctorate to pursue research, publication, and teaching on topics in jazz history utilizing the resources of the James R. and Susan Neumann Jazz Collection and other special collections at Oberlin College & Conservatory.

Utilizing the extensive resources of the James R. and Susan Neumann Collection (recordings, print matter, artifacts, and more), the Fellow will advance and support teaching and scholarship on jazz history across Oberlin College and Conservatory and beyond.

Primary duties include:

  • Teach at least two courses per year on topics in jazz history, including a one-semester jazz survey course, drawing extensively on materials from the Neumann Collection;
  • Pursue an active research program (e.g., publications, conference presentations, and more), utilizing materials from the Neumann Collection and other holdings at Oberlin;
  • In keeping with Oberlin’s dedication to undergraduate teaching and learning, involve students in the research process by modeling appropriate methods in special-collection use, and support students and faculty interested in utilizing materials from the Neumann Collection in research projects, teaching, capstone projects, and more;
  • Participate actively in the intellectual and creative life of Oberlin College and Conservatory.

Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2026 and continue until the position is filled. Those received after that date may be considered until the position is filled.
