Brief description

The School is seeking to make an appointment from 1 July 2025 in the following area, and we strongly encourage applicants from the designated groups.

The incumbent’s primary areas of research and teaching experience should be in jazz and popular music history, though ideally their experience and interests will be broad enough to encompass other areas. The member should demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of South African and pan-African jazz.

Qualifications and experience

A PhD in Jazz and Popular Music Studies; a track record of university teaching experience; and an established research record or demonstrable potential as a researcher.

Duties

Teach undergraduate courses in jazz and popular music, as well as in other areas; and supervise graduate students. In addition, the incumbent may be expected to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching in the School. Their teaching and research should be focused on Africa. They will be expected to play a role in the administration of the Music Department and the School.
